The Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire County Ladies' Golf Association held their first County Seniors' Championship at Glyn Abbey Golf Course on August 27. Sixty-four ladies entered from seven clubs in the two counties.

Olwen Davies, of Ashburnham, as county chairman, was the starter, and later did the presentations. She commented on how hopefully everyone started out, but that as the weather deteriorated, so a very different lot of ladies came in off the 18th.

Everyone found the course very challenging, given the conditions, which made club selection tricky. The bad weather closed in for the latter part of the afternoon, but everyone tried their very best and most completed the course.

The competition followed the format of the Welsh Seniors, so there were five age categories, with one winner for each.

Group A was won by Ann Dassen, of Trefloyne, with 31 pts; Group B by Sue Collard, of Ashburnham, with 29; Group C by Lizzie Ervine, of Ashburnham, with 29; Group D by Anne Jones, of Carmarthen, with 30; and Group E by Ellie Harper, of Newport Links, with 20.

There were five prizes awarded for the championship itself. In fifth place was Gill Hart, of Ashburnham, with 31 points; fourth was Lind Cowarde, of Trefloyne, with 32; third was Ann Swisthak, of Glyn Abbey, with 33; runner-up to the champion with 33 was Sally Forrester, of Ashburnham; but the winner, and Ladies' Senior Champion for 2009, was the ladies' captain of Glyn Abbey, Jan Leyshon, with a marvellous 36 points.

Preferred lies were in use, so the competition was a non-qualifier.

All agreed that the hospitality at Glyn Abbey was excellent and Olwen thanked all concerned for their generosity.
