Whitland WI recently celebrated their 100th birthday with a garden party to mark their centenary, having been established in July 1921.
The institute currently has 28 members and holds a variety of events throughout the year to support local charities and businesses, as well as having monthly meetings with guest speakers or organised trips out.
The garden party was held at a member’s house and an individual afternoon tea box was provided by The Coffee Lounge in Whitland, with bespoke hand-made Welsh love spoons, made by the son of one of the members, attached to each one to commemorate the day.
The cake was made by Emma Allum, one of the committee members, and she chose a sunflower theme due to the association with The Calendar Girls film.
President Barbara Hunt gave a fantastic speech before cutting the cake and raising a toast to all members, old and new.
It was a great chance for everyone to all meet up again outdoors to celebrate the centenary, especially as the members had not been able to get together for the last 18 months due to Covid restrictions.
Whitland WI are hoping to resume monthly meetings again very soon in a Covid-safe environment to ensure everyone is safe and happy. If anyone wants more information about joining the WI, please contact secretary Nicola Bellarby on 01994 453708.
