RUNNING IS EASIER IN THE WINTER
The next time the winter wind and rain is lashing in our faces and we start to question our decision to take a morning jog, running is actually easier in the colder months. A St. Mary’s University study found that heart rates are six per cent lower when running at eight degrees centigrade, compared with 22 degrees and that runners sweat 38 per cent more at the hotter temperature. This reduces the cardiovascular demands on the body and we also use less energy in colder weather, which means winter is the perfect time to set some PBs.
