Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire Senedd Member Samuel Kurtz is urging residents to celebrate the people, businesses, and projects that make rural life flourish, as the much-loved Countryside Alliance Awards, affectionately known as the ‘Rural Oscars’ - return for 2026.

The Countryside Alliance Awards honour the very best of rural Britain, from village shops and local butchers to community pubs and farm enterprises. They recognise the unsung heroes who go above and beyond for their customers, keep rural traditions alive, and create opportunities for the next generation.

For the thousands of small businesses that form the backbone of the countryside, a nomination is a powerful acknowledgement of their hard work, resilience, and dedication. Many past winners have said the awards have boosted staff morale, strengthened community ties, and opened new doors for growth and opportunity.

Pembrokeshire has a proud history of success in the ‘Rural Oscars’. Coterie Leather, based near Narberth, was crowned the Wales winner in the Rural Enterprise category, while Velfrey Vineyard, also from the county, took home the title of Wales Champion for Best Local Food and Drink.

Their achievements highlight the incredible quality, innovation, and passion found within Pembrokeshire’s rural economy.

Nominations are now open, with categories including:

• Best Butcher

• Local Food/Drink

• Rural Enterprise

• Village Shop / Post Office

• Best Pub

Mr Kurtz said:“Our rural businesses across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire are the beating heart of our communities; they employ local people, champion local produce, and provide vital services that keep our villages and towns alive.

“I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to nominate their favourite local business or rural enterprise. Whether it is your village shop or the butcher who always goes the extra mile, this is your chance to celebrate their hard work.

“By supporting these awards, we are not only recognising excellence, but we are also standing up for rural life and ensuring that its value is celebrated across Wales and the whole of the United Kingdom.”
