An amateur sports club in Pembrokeshire has been chosen to receive a grant as part of the latest round of funding from Betfair's Cash 4 Clubs scheme. This round of funding saw hundreds of applicants and a grand total of £13,000 awarded to 15 amateur sports clubs from across the UK..

Tenby Surf Lifesaving Club is a local charity that operates three core sessions for young children, juniors and seniors. It teaches the multi-disciplined sport of lifesaving which includes pool and open water swimming, surf craft events, beach events and powered craft competitions.

Lifesaving sport is designed to educate participants in surf safety messages and to build confidence and skills that keep people safe on the coast. In 2012, the club had approximately 50 children attend weekly training and provided 20 hours of educational talks to local schools. The club also provides training and assessment for those wishing to become surf lifeguards, first aiders and sports coaches.

The club's long term ambition is to help save lives. In the short term it hopes to further develop its voluntary lifeguard service and expand its education service. The club will use the £850 Cash 4 Clubs grant to purchase a new surf rescue board after a volunteer was forced to abandon one in a dangerous sea rescue.

Angleo Fecci, committee member, said: 'This £850 Cash 4 Clubs grant will allow us to purchase a much needed surf rescue board so we can continue to educate the community on coastal swimming. We will replace a board that had to be abandoned after being damaged whilst saving swimmers at risk of being swept into rocks or caves by the sea's current."

The club is always looking for members aged 16-plus to join their team of lifesavers. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with Tenby SLSC, you should contact the captain on [email protected]">[email protected] or search the club on Facebook.
