ARE you a carer, caring for a member of your own family and unable, for whatever reason to access public transport? If so, you will be interested in a new pilot scheme starting in Pembrokeshire, especially for carers without transport who need to attend carers meetings, go shopping or make an essential journey, as an example, visit the doctor, dentist or sick relations.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) has received funding from the Special Carers Grant allocated locally, to run the scheme.

Jill Edge, 'Cars for Carers', co-ordinator of the scheme, and RSVP area organiser, said: "Carers need to book 48 hours prior to requiring transport, stating how many passengers and where they wish to be taken. This enables the nearest volunteer driver to collect, drive and return them to their destinations, waiting if necessary, or return to collect the 'passengers' later. The carer will be asked to make a contribution towards costs based on the bus fare for a similar length journey. Concessionary passes can be used for these trips when the cost will be halved."

The scheme started on July 1. Jill would like to hear from carers who would like to use 'Cars for Carers' transport, as well as volunteer drivers, who must obviously possess a full driving licence, comprehensive insurance and a well-maintained car. Transporting to schools and day centres and hospital visits are now permitted under this scheme.

Jill is delighted to have enrolled ex-mathematics teacher, Stan Smith, of Canaston Bridge, Narberth, as her first volunteer driver. Stan holds a Hackney Carriage Licence and for the past 10 years had held the Advanced Motorists Licence, so carers can be assured they will be in careful hands themselves.

It is estimated that one in eight of the UK population is a carer, which means that there are around 14,000 in Pembrokeshire alone, many of whom are disadvantaged by the restrictions placed on them in their caring role.

'Cars for Carers' aims to relieve the burden on carers by offering them transport for those essential journeys as and when they need it.

If you have suitable transport and can offer a few hours a week, Jill is urgently waiting to hear from you. She can be contacted on (01437) 768195; if on answerphone, please leave your name and telephone number for your call to be returned.

Further information is available from Jill Edge, RSVP area organiser, on (01437) 768195 or RSVP press office on 029 2073 2049.
