Tenby Town Council and Pembrokeshire County Council have joined forces in a bid to provide improved services to the council tax payers of the town.

While the town council has been maintaining the town's municipal gardens on the county council's behalf for a number of years, this pioneering new spirit of co-operation will see the county council's street cleansing workforce joining forces with town council gardens staff.

Under the supervision of the town council, it is hoped the scheme will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of both operations within Pembrokeshire's premier tourist resort.

The county council's Tenby cleansing team and the town council's gardeners had an informal meeting with Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas and fellow town councillors in the Mayor's Parlour, last week prior to the new scheme's start on Monday.

Clr. Mrs. Thomas welcomed the new initiative, the creation of a 'caring for Tenby team' which would lead to an even more efficient service.

She was delighted that the county council had given the town council the opportunity to take even more care of Tenby and hoped that the town's people would rally behind this new working arrangement.

"While bringing the grounds and cleansing teams together will help foster harmonious and productive working relations and improve service, the people of Tenby can assist us by ensuring that they only put their rubbish out on collection days," she said.

"We all know that seagulls can be a major problem, ripping open bags which leads to more litter on the streets, particularly when people put rubbish out days before it is due to be collected.

"If they only put rubbish out when it is due for collection, and stopped putting trade and domestic waste in the litter bins it would be of great help," she added.

Trade waste (blue bag and PCC Euro bin) collections are made by agreement on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Domestic collections within the walled town, the Esplanade, South Cliff Street and Victoria Streets areas and Harding Street are undertaken on a Friday.

Collections in the Harbour area, St Mary's Street, Cresswell Street, Augustus Place, Jones Terrace, Park Place, Harries Street, The Norton and North Cliff areas are on Wednesday and all other areas of the town on a Monday.
