Volunteers who will be helping at the Carew500 in early May have participated in a free training course for stewards run by PLANED in partnership with the county council's licensing department and Dyfed- Powys Police.
The participants learnt about the roles and responsibilities of stewards, the principles of traffic and crowd management, as well as health and safety and other issues that volunteer stewards need to be aware of. They were also given a few handy tips as to how to keep the visitors happy and ensure that the event runs smoothly. The free course for volunteer stewards consists of two sessions over two weeks and can be tailored to specific groups of volunteers, for example agricultural shows, music festivals etc. More training courses for volunteer stewards are planned in the near future.
PLANED (Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development) is also organising another training course for organisers of community festivals and events.
The course is free of charge and will take place on four consecutive Thursday evenings in May. Sessions are led by organisers with expertise in various fields including event organisation, risk assessment, funding, writing press releases, and licensing, with input from Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services, the licensing section of Pembrokeshire County Council, and Dyfed-Powys Police. All participants receive a certificate and a copy of PLANED's handbook Organising Community Events and Festivals. For information on both the steward training course and the training for festival and event organisers and also for bookings contact Kate Lindley on (01834) 862109.
The training and handbook is funded through PLANED's EU LEADER+ Action 2 festivals and events programme, which is part-funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and Milford Haven Port Authority.
