Carew 7

Aberystwyth Uni 1

For the first time this season, Carew managed to get out one of their strongest teams and it showed with seven goals to the home side - and if the students' goalkeeper had not been in such good form, it could have be double that.

From the start, the Rooks attacked down both flanks with wingbacks Barton and Meridith linking with the wide midfielders Williams and Cole and causing the Aberystwyth Uni defence more trouble than they could cope with.

The steadying influence of Wheeler in the middle and Mosely at sweeper, coupled with outstanding defence from Clements and Bowles, gave the Rooks' attacking force the confidence to push forward on every occasion.

Goals came quickly in the first half, with captain Jamie Smith getting a hat-trick in the first half and Meridith slotting one in after a 40-yard mazy run.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with Barton getting his reward for excellent work down the left and Reid latching on to a Williams cross.

The Aber students did not give up and, despite the score line, the game was a hard-fought contest.

In the final quarter, Aber came close on several occasions as they pressed the Carew goal, with some fine saves from Shane Lewis and a goal-line clearance from Clements. However, the pressure told as Aber got their reward as the Carew defence failed to clear a ball.

Pullen and Lewis came on at left midfield and made good headway in the attacking half, linking with Smith to round the game off with his fourth.
