Carew will play Narberth in the final of the Graham Jewson Harrison-Allen Bowl at Cresselly on Saturday, August 2, after defeating Lawrenny by seven wickets in the second semi-final at Whitland. Not surprisingly, Carew skipper Rob Scourfield was beaming after the match when he said: "We are delighted with the performance tonight. We bowled pretty well and pretty straight. Going into the game, we had a bit of a plan generally and also with special regard to Ceri Brace, the young leg spinner. "We worked hard on catching, although we didn't do so well tonight, but we did contain the Lawrenny batsmen and we were more than happy with a Lawrenny total of 107. "We are more than lucky having Ceri Brace in the team and we have spent a lot of time around the table talking tactics and field placing concerning his special brand of wrist spin. "We have also talked to former experienced players such as Gethin Evans, Martyn Cole and Dave Sefton to help us develop a special game plan. "He is very accurate for a leg spinner. He took four wickets in the quarter-final of the Village Cup in Cornwall and he has taken four wickets for us this evening. All of a sudden he has become a key player in the team. "Simon Wood won us the game this evening with a great knock of 69 and it was a bit disappointing that he could not see it through until the end. "He is a class act and when he does fire there are not many teams around who can contain him. "Opening batsman Nick Scourfield was the foil in a match-winning third wicket partnership of 87." The Lawrenny batsmen were never let off the leash. Excellent all-round bowling by Carew, backed up by good fielding, did not allow any of the batsmen to get on top and there was no late order surge in the run rate. James Buckle was the top scorer with 21, supported by Ian Jenkins with 15, as Ceri Brace took out the middle order in his four for 32 spell. Rob Scourfield prevented the tail from wagging in his three for 22 stint. Simon Wood finished with two for 19 and picked up a wicket at the beginning and end of the Lawrenny innings. Rob Williams had Carew opener Brian Hall caught off a leading edge by Steve Lewis with the total on 18 and picked up a wicket next ball by bowling Wayne Cannon. This brought Wood to the crease to join the steadfast Nick Scourfield. Soon the pair scored runs all around the wicket, with Wood unleashing his full array of shots. Wristy shots to fine leg and backward of point were combined with full-blooded front foot drives for anything overpitched and when the Lawrenny bowlers dropped the ball short, they got the full treatment with some powerful pulls. Only three runs were needed for victory when Wood, who had survived a couple of chances, was caught by Ian Jenkins at mid-on off the bowling of Steve Lewis for an attractive innings of 69, which included one six and 10 fours. Phil Jones then joined Nick Scourfield in the closing formalities, with Scourfield finishing on 22 not out. Rob Williams was the most successful Lawrenny bowler with a return of two for 30.
