One of Tenby’s trusty Cancer Research Shop volunteers has given the charity another boost after raising nearly £1,000 for the charity - following another annual festive Christmas cake sale.
For the sixth year in a row, Maureen Lower MBE baked 135 marzipan and iced Christmas cakes, with the funds raised being presented to Cancer Research.
Maureen has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for the past 29 years, and over the festive period, she set about once again making and selling her own festive treats for a worthy cause.
This time, £815 was raised for the Tenby Cancer Shop on Tudor Square (where Maureen volunteers) and a further £145 raised for the Carmarthen shop.
A native of Birmingham, Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and now resides in Kilgetty, was awarded the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2003 for her volunteering work, and the German Medal of Merit.
Maureen usually travels back to Berlin for those that have ordered from her there, but was unable to again last year due to the pandemic.
“I would like to thank my customers again for supporting me and the cause, as I managed to sell all but five cakes over the festive period,” she said.
She would also like to thank the following people for helping: Robert B in Saundersfoot for donating 168 eggs; Linda W of Narberth (£96); Sharon B at Tesco Pembroke Dock (£25); Sian R at Morrisons Haverfordwest (£37); Upton Farm (6kg of icing sugar); Angela A of Pembroke Dock (£30); David from Kilgetty Co-op for marzipan and icing; Angela A for assisting with some icing; and Sharon from Saundersfoot for cutting 120 cake bases.
Last Friday, Maureen and her pooch Sammy (pictured with the shop’s assistant manager Sally Turner) were able to present the cheques to Jenny Hughes-Cooke (manager at the Tenby shop), and Laura Williams manager of the Carmarthen shop.
