Do you want a skateboard facility in Tenby?

The Friends of the Jubilee Park, in conjunction with Tenby Town Council, are working towards providing this facility and would like your help.

The story so far

The Town Council has been looking for a site for a skateboard park for over eight years. Every site they came up with was unsuitable and would not have received planning permission.

In August 2011, Pembrokeshire County Council had to remove the play equipment at the Jubilee Park as it was unsafe. Tenby Town Council were told that unfortunately, the county council did not have the funds to replace the equipment and suggested the town council take over the area as an extension of the land already maintained by them as a toddler play park.

A Facebook site was launched by locals complaining about the county council's removal of the play equipment and the town council decided to join forces with the 'Facebookers' and the Tenby Youth Forum to form a group to rectify matters.

As a result, the Friends of the Jubilee Park was formed in November 2011 and it was decided to raise funds to help Tenby Town Council to replace the play equipment.

At the same time, a decision was taken by Tenby Town Council and the Friends to utilise some of the space to provide a skate and wheeled play facility within the park.

Tenby Town Council had designs commissioned to provide a wheeled play facility and play equipment for six to 12-year-olds. A design was chosen, which is on display in the De Valence, and a budget of £85,000 agreed.

The town council allocated £38,500 towards the project, while the Friends agreed to raise the remainder through grant aid and local fundraising initiatives. The idea is to have the funding in place by April to start the work to enable the Park to be opened in June to coincide with HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Friends have several ideas for raising funds, but need more volunteers to come forward to help, especially skateboarders. To this end, the Friends of the Jubilee Park will be holding a meeting at the De Valence at 2 pm on February 16 during half-term. All ages are welcome to attend, particularly skateboarders as the Friends are concerned that, if there is no interest from the skateboarding community in helping to raise funds, the decision may be taken to drop the wheeled play element from the plan in favour of more general play equipment.
