Councillors calling for crossing improvements to be made on a busy road into Tenby have again emphasised the need for work to be carried out to ensure the safety of local schoolchildren.
Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Paul Rapi and his colleague Clr. Hayden Johns, told their fellow members that it was important to keep the matter in the picture as their concerns were increasing over that section of Narberth Road, where pedestrians attempted to cross opposite Glenview Crescent, as a 'bottleneck' of traffic builds up, making it dangerous for schoolchildren and the elderly to cross the road.
Pembrokeshire County Council had suggested previously that it would be too difficult to introduce a roundabout in that area, because of a lack of surrounding space.
"Cars seem to be stopping on that section even more frequently now, and I counted eight children at one time on the crossing island at one point last week," said Clr. Johns.
"If they can put a roundabout down by The Green, where there is already a crossing, then why can't they do something similar here?" he continued.
The town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, said that Tenby Civic Society had also raised the matter of improving the juntion with the county council's head of highways and construction, Darren Thomas.
"Last week there was a highways officer in that area monitoring traffic, and he noted over 400 traffic movements in one morning," said Mr. Davies, adding that around 6,500 vehicles on average passed through there each day.
Clr. Mike Evans told members that he had also discussed the matter with Mr. Thomas, and said that, as it was a classed as a category A road, work for a roundabout would involve taking up garden space in that area.
"The logic from the county council has been to say no, but the logic to do nothing should also be no! There is a controlled crossing near Kiln Park that works well; it's on green at all times until somebody needs to cross.
"It's just total common sense to see a similar controlled crossing introduced on that section of the Narberth Road that is causing concern," he added.
Councillors agreed to write to Pembrokeshire County Council to propose that a controlled crossing be introduced in the vicinity of the present island on Narberth Road.
