It wasn’t just the weather that was like California in Tenby last weekend. You may also have noticed lots of VW California Camper vans around attending the UK VW California Club meeting at Well Park, New Hedges. The club regularly holds meetings and events throughout the UK and Europe, but this was the first ever meeting in Wales and Tenby proved a great place to host it.
The VW California is an unique purpose-built campervan, providing all you need to travel. The club was formed in 2011 and now has over 11,000 members from across the UK and Europe. The Tenby meet was well attended and limited to 40 vans and their families.
Sponsored by The Tenby Brewing Company, a welcome pack of beer and some home-made Welsh cakes, together with a copy of the Tenby Observer Summer Guide, were given to each member on arrival. This helped provide a very warm welcome to Tenby on what was a beautiful, sunny and successful weekend.
Some members had travelled long distances to get here. Tom Crispin, his wife Clare and family (pictured) arrived in Tenby as their final leg of a 34-county tour over the last 12 months. They were suitably impressed - “since returning from our meander around Europe, and with previously undiscovered towns like Tenby on our doorstep, we are wondering why we felt the need to go further afield than Britain.”
Another member, Steve Birbeck from Durham, said: “If Carlsberg did VW meets - many many thanks for introducing us to this stunning area.”
The three-day event saw wall to wall sunshine, with some members taking advantage of a trip to Caldey Island on two of the days. Three members also used the opportunity to prepare for the Long Course Weekend and Ironman Wales in September.
The organiser, Gareth Evans, was delighted with the event and said: “Given that space was limited, we sold out very quickly. The weather was a bonus and I was really pleased that visitors took time to explore the town and area; many said they intend to come back on holiday.”
He wished to again thank the Tenby Brewing Company for their generosity and Well Park for providing such an ideal venue.
The club’s next meeting is on September 7 at Romo Island, Denmark, and is already sold out.
