The Caldey Swim has once again welcomed Tenby-based financial advisors Harbour Wealth Ltd as one of its 2019 sponsors.
The sell-out swim, which has established itself as an iconic feature on the open water calender, covers around 2.5 miles between the beaches of the island and the town.
One hundred swimmers have signed up to tackle the crossing, and there is also a reserve list of 40.
The swim, leaving Caldey’s Priory Beach at 1.45 pm on Sunday, August 18, is raising money for Tenby RNLI and Tenby Surflink, with both organisations helping to provide the all-important safety cover for the event.
The first swimmer is expected back on the North Beach, near the end of the pier, at around 2.25 pm. Medals will be presented by the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Tony Brown, and the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Simon Hancock.
Swimming between Tenby and Caldey Island has been a long-established tradition for individuals and groups for many years, but 2013 was the first time the distance was covered under the umbrella of the Tenby Sea Swimming Association (TSSA), which has organised the town’s legendary Boxing Day Swim for nearly 50 years.
The 2018 Caldey Swim had to be cancelled twice because of weather conditions, but fingers are crossed for fairer winds and calmer seas for this year’s event.
Said TSSA chairman Chris Osborne: “After last year’s disappointing double cancellation, we hope this challenging swim will be looked on kindly by whoever controls the sea and the weather.”
