A DATE has been confirmed for a Tenby to Caldey swim this summer.

The event is being organised by William Davis, a journalist from Bristol.

William wrote to us back in March about the swim and was delighted with the response he received from would-be swimmers and helpers.

"I am so thrilled with the level of support we have been receiving from people wanting to swim, people wanting to support in boats and people just wanting to just be involved in some way or another," he told us this week.

"I think it's going to be a fine event and I hope we can raise a substantial sum for the Alzheimer's Disease charity."

William's mother who he helps care for suffers from Alzheimer's.

There are aleady around 35 people looking to do the swim, making it the largest Caldey swim for many years, William believes.

The date for the swim has now been set for the weekend of the August Bank Holiday, August 28-30.

William continued: "Ideally, I'd like the sea to be perfect on the Saturday, but we need to be prepared for all eventualities and have options to do the swim on the Sunday or even the Monday, too.

"After consulting with John in Tenby, we have many practicalities to plan before the event, but we have already decided on a few things."

The swim will take place on Saturday, August 29. Swimmers will meet on the Mayor's Slip before the start to be paired up with their support boat.

The swim will begin on Castle Beach, with a staggered start - the elite swimmers going off first, followed by those going for a more sedate splash to Caldey!

A VIP send-off party will launch the swimmers into the sea with fine words and a cheery wave goodbye.

William has met with Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Julie Evans, who kindly offered support from both her and Tenby Town Council. There will be people collecting money from the crowds gathered on the beach and volunteers are needed.

There will be some form of 'gathering' afterwards.

William is also appealing for people with boats to help as support.

Added William: "We will need to put together a pretty substantial fleet as we have more swimmers than first proposed. Any organisations like the Tenby Sailing Club or Sea Scouts would be very welcome participants.

"I also need a list and contact details of all those who may be able to lend a hand in any other way - first-aiders, fund-raisers and anything else anyone can think of."

William will continue to write his blog http://www.dogintheoven.wordpress.com">www.dogintheoven.wordpress.com and which will have a link to the Just Giving site for people to pledge donations.

Anyone who would like to take part in the swim or offer help with support boats or fund-raising can contact William by email at [email protected]">[email protected] and [email protected]">[email protected] or by telephoning 07875 138 147.

William added: "I went for a swim on Sunday, along the South Beach, through St. Catherine's, round the island and then back along the shore for a couple of hundred metres. It was brilliant! I loved it and it's re-stoked my enthusiasm for getting across to Caldey!"
