One hundred intrepid sea swimmers are just weeks away from the iconic challenge of the annual Caldey Swim.
The event is now firmly established on the UK open water swimming calendar, and promises a keen contest between the entrants, who come from all over the country to make the 2.5-mile crossing from the monastic island to Tenby.
A £500 sponsorship donation has just been given by The Port of Milford Haven to the swim’s organisers, the Tenby Sea Swimming Association (TSSA).
Swimming between Caldey and the mainland has been a long-standing tradition in Tenby for individuals and small groups.
However, 2013 was the first time for the distance to be swum under the umbrella of TSSA, which has organised the town’s famous Boxing Day Swim for over 40 years.
Thousands of pounds have been raised for Tenby RNLI from the Caldey Swims, with top local triathlete Olly Simon leading the field in the first two events.
Said TSSA chairman Chris Osborne: “There was disappointment when the 2015 swim had to be cancelled due to sea and weather conditions, but hopefully we will be more fortunate this year.
“We are, once again, very grateful to the Port of Milford Haven for their kind sponsorship and to our full house of 100 swimmers whose efforts will result in us being able to make a generous donation to Tenby RNLI.”
The swim sets off from Caldey Island’s Priory Beach at 10.45 am on Sunday, August 14.
