A colossal cake sale in Narberth on Saturday in aid of Help for Heroes was a huge success.

It was organised by Sally Amoore whose son James was very seriously wounded when he stood on a bomb in the notoriously dangerous district of Sangin in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in 2009.

The event, opened by Mayor of Narberth, Clr. Suzanne Radford-Smith, has raised a fantastic £4,300 to date.

Said Sally: "We had a beautiful cake kindly donated to us by Mike from the Station House pub in Whitland and made specially for him by Amser Te cake shop in Whitland.

"We had the most beautiful chocolate replica of the H4H banner with the stretcher bearers donated by Fredericks Chocalatier in Narberth."

She continued: "The weather was great after a fairly dismal start with a hefty downpour. People were very generous with their donations to the soldiers who walked about with buckets."

Also in attendance was the Lord Lieutenant with some army and navy cadets and Simon Hart MP.

There was great entertainment from Estron and Quatro who provided Morris dancing and good music.

Added Sally: "The army were really helpful in providing us with a big tent should it tip down and were around all day to help out. The response from the public was superb; we had hundreds of cakes of all sorts, biscuits, jams, breads - all beautifully presented, and the shoppers kept up a steady stream all day.

"The raffle prizes were also fantastic and included dinner for two at the Grove Hotel, Narberth, a spa day at St. Brides, a holiday break at Bluestone, bakery items from Lakeland and many other generous offers, plus we had some fun games - guess the weight of the cake, name the wounded soldier on the Help for Heroes banner, bat the rat and how many sweets in the bottle."

Sally concluded: "It was wonderful to see how many people had entered into the spirit of the event and cooked and baked so many delicious things. We sold everything and I would like to say how very grateful we are for all this fantastic support."
