To celebrate the end of 2017, Tenby Air Cadets held an awards evening which saw several cadets get recognised for their achievements throughout the year. The awards are as follows:

Best drill was won by Cadet K. Knowles, who surprised and impressed her instructors with how quickly she was able to understand and perform drill with the snap, staccato and discipline.

Best uniform was won by Cadet X. Viggars, who ensured that her uniform was neatly pressed and highly polished at all times, setting a good example to her peers and wearing the uniform with pride.

Most improved was won by Cadet T. Sanders, who has impressed staff with how much he has matured as a person, showing high levels of integrity and personal development, as well as a desire to achieve within cadets.

Cadet Xanda Viggars was also awarded a Squadron Commander’s Commendation in recognition and appreciation for meritorious services to 1284 (Tenby) Squadron and for providing a great example to her peers in all aspects of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC).

It was due to Xanda’s hard work, as mentioned, that she was promoted to Corporal (Cpl), a position that comes with a higher level of responsibility. When Xanda joined, she was the only cadet on the squadron. However, a recruitment drive was well underway and Xanda helped by preparing the squadron headquarters ready to receive a high number of people.

The rank of corporal will see Xanda taking command of a group of people and able to effectively lead them towards a common goal, thinking about team and individual needs and working under time constraints.

Air Cadets offer many activities for young people, such as flying, sports, music, adventurous training, as well as national camps. You’ll soon find that being an air cadet is its own reward, you will constantly see the benefits of your own efforts, building on your achievements, earning BTECs and DoE awards. You’ll be expected to take part in as many of the activities as possible, but with what’s on offer, you won’t need much persuading!

If you’re interested in joining and aged between 12 and 17, contact Sergeant David Folder RAFAC via email: [email protected] or call the squadron headquarters and leave a message on 01834 842765. We parade on Tuesdays from 7 to 9.30 pm - come along and see what we can do for you. You could also follow us on Facebook at fb.me/1284RAFAC to see what we are achieving.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Over 20? Seeking a new challenge? Would you like to develop skills, leadership qualities and gain qualifications too?

As the backbone of our organisation we’re always on the lookout for high-calibre individuals to become volunteers, helping to run the activities that play such an important role in the lives of our young members.

All kinds of people make up our volunteer staff, coming from a range of backgrounds and interests. Obviously it helps if you have had direct experience of working with young people, but this isn’t essential, as we will train and support you at every stage. That said, you’ll have some personal qualities that are essential, such as patience, maturity and responsibility, along with an understanding of young people and their needs.
