It has been a busy few weeks for the riders of Tenby Aces Cycling Club. On Saturday, July 28, Andrew Milward, Darren Mutter and Gareth Rees took part in the Tour Of The Black Mountain Cyclo-sportive. The 115-mile route over the Brecon Beacons was one of the hardest Sportives of the year. With a large number of riders being collected by the broom wagon, it was an event that all three were just happy to complete. Saturday, August 4, was The Iron Mountain Sportive starting from Abergavenny, a warm-up event for the next day when the British Elite Men's Road Race Championship took place. Tour De France rider, David Miller took part and went on to win. For the Iron Mountain, Andrew, Darren and Gareth were joined by Alastair Birch. It ws a great event to be a part of, with a few of the Elite riders using the sportive to warm up for the next day's race. Alastair, Andrew and Gareth covered the first 50 miles in less than 2 hours 45 minutes. Darren would have been quicker if it had not been for Tesco's! Seems like a strange excuse, but due to the Tesco delivery van parking in front of a direction sign, Darren took a wrong turn and added an extra six miles to his route! Gareth called it a day after 50 miles, but Andrew completed the 100 miles in six hours 23 minutes, with Alastair and Darren close behind in six hours 52 minutes. An enjoyable day, with the good weather a big bonus. The following day was the annual Pembrokeshire Charity Bike Ride in Haverfordwest. Taking part on the 25-mile route were Tanis Hand, Carlton Coates, Nick Brown, Jon Mills, John Shuttleworth, Shane Dougherty, Andrew Millward and Gareth Rees, as well as big Paul and Pembs Velos member, Simon Scott. Also taking part on the 15-mile route were family members, Tara Rees and Carroll and Eleanor Brown. There was a large turnout of over 300 riders, who were treated to superb weather and a well organised event, with the participants helping to raise money for the chosen local charities. The Tenby Aces were delighted to have such a good turnout of members, especially with one of the event's co-organisers, Tim Hughes, of 1 Stop Financial Services, also being one of the club's sponsors. Being a charity ride and not a race, it was not timed, but only two Army category three riders made it home before Nick Brown (approx 1hr 15mins), with Gareth fourth back some five or six minutes later. The rest of the Ace riders were not far behind, having made it a slightly more leisurely ride. Special thanks to Kevin, of Mikes Bikes, who went and collected a spare tyre for Tanis, who suffered a tyre failure on the starting line. Well done to Carroll, Eleanor and Tara for completing the 15-mile route - perhaps future members of the Ace's!
