An opticians in Haverfordwest is showing that the traditional Saturday job is far from dead, by giving young people the chance to learn new skills and kick-start their careers.

Figures show that almost one in eight of those aged 16-24 are not in education, employment or training, and the decline of the traditional Saturday job has been identified as one reason why young people aren’t ready for work.

However, the locally owned and run Specsavers Haverfordwest store is committed to encouraging more youngsters into the world of work. The team employs Kyle Ashborne, 16, who has worked weekends at the store as a trainee optical assistant since November, alongside studying at college.

The role offers hands-on experience, helping to develop skills in customer service and retail, while providing an introduction to the wide range of further career and training opportunities available.

Mr Ashbourne said: “Working at Specsavers alongside my studies has been a great experience. I have developed my confidence and communication skills and learnt so much about customer care and the optical industry. The flexibility and weekend work really helps me balance my job with college, and I feel supported to develop my skills for the future.”

Weekend roles for young people at Specsavers often involve greeting customers, supporting the team with appointments, and learning about the technology and processes involved in an eye examination. For many young people, it’s their first experience of the workplace, helping them to build confidence and learn valuable skills.

Specsavers store director, Andy Britton, says the team is keen to inspire young people to see a career in optics as a viable career option.

He said: “A Saturday position is an ideal way to gain an early insight into the profession, while picking up valuable, real-world experience in a supportive workplace.

“It’s not just about earning extra money – it’s about giving young people the chance to build confidence, learn how to work as part of a team and develop strong communication and customer service skills that will serve them well in the future. Many of our colleagues began in weekend roles and have since gone on to enjoy long and rewarding careers with us, which we’re incredibly proud to support.”

Specsavers offers a wide range of career paths, from retail and customer service to clinical roles in optics. With ongoing training and development opportunities, the stores are committed to investing in their teams and helping people progress.
