Local councillors are set to further discuss their ‘street trading policy’ later this month.

Speaking at Wednesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Dr. Peter Easy told his colleagues that he had drafted out a strategy for the town to try and move forward with a policy that would allow the authorities to be able to control street trading matters more effectively.

“One option would be to have a so-called ‘blanket ban’ on all street trading licence applications, which would mean that we’d potentially never have to discuss the matter again, or to just simply discuss applications as and when they come to us,” he told members, stating that a set-out policy would give the town council a list of points on which to judge each application, such as the goods that are trading and locations etc.

Clr. Dr. Easy said that as a footnote it might be worth clarifying what areas of the town were classed as ‘consent’ or ‘prohibited’ streets, which could prove useful in defining what category the Five Arches area would come into.

“Personally I’d favour the option that we do exercise the right to comment and discuss street trading applications that come before us, and not have a blanket ban as such,” he continued.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown said that she felt a big discussion was needed on the matter as there were so many different opinions on the issue around the table.

“I don’t want a blanket ban either, but others do,” she said, with councillors agreeing to put the matter on the agenda again for their next meeting.
