A new hockey development centre has been launched in Pembrokeshire.

The centre, aimed at boys and girls under the age of 14, aims to develop the top hockey players - and coaches - of the future.

Players will be nominated by their schools or hockey clubs and the best players will progress to the prestigious Regional Academies.

Run by Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - and the Welsh Hockey Union (WHU), it was launched at the Fishguard astro turf last Monday.

Coaching will be led by Roger Middleton, a former national league coach from Yorkshire, assisted by Angela Miles, hockey development officer for Pembrokeshire, and club coaches and PE teachers.

Thirty-four youngsters attended the first session this week.

Angela Miles said that the development centre would form a key part of player and coach development.

"I'm delighted that players now have this pathway between school, club junior sections and regional academies," she said.
