Christine Shewry and Jill Williams, music director and accompanist of the 'Choir of Gentlemen' (CoG), are seen receiving a very generous sponsorship cheque for £100 from the charitable foundation of the Yorkshire Building Society, Tenby. Also in the picture are Margaret Rees and Eric Mullins, who are the sponsorship co-ordinators for the event, together with Yorkshire Building Society staff, Sian Cavey, Karen Smith and Roz Oak. Missing are Alison Lees, Allison Thomas and Lucie Mabbett. The Choir of Gentlemen will perform a one-off Gala Concert at the Park House Pavilion, County Showground, Haverfordwest on May 7 next year. Because Christine and Jill have both been very grateful for the care and treatment given by the medical and nursing staff, the aim is to raise £15,000 to purchase special orthopaedic chairs for Ward 1 and a mobile ultrasound sonosite monitor for the Breast Cancer Unit in Withybush Hospital, and this sponsorship will help to cover costs to stage the event. Christine and Jill hope that whole county will get involved with the project, either as part of the audience or as a member of the choir. Rehearsals are going well and the choir is now 136 strong. However, more choristers are needed and Christine has told us that it is not too late to join, because individual part tapes are available for those who need them, so that, between rehearsals, you can learn your part when sitting at home or in the car. "It's a great opportunity for those who have always wanted to give male voice singing a go," said Christine. "Remember this is just one off." The next rehearsals will be, top tenor - January 10, second tenor - January 17, top bass - January 24 and bottom bass - January 31.
