Never since the days of Kenny Sutton and Yosser Hughes has Manorbier seen such a solid defence than that witnessed against Broad Haven last Saturday.

With a defence of the skipper Marv Protheroe, Liam Robson, Austyn John and James Hall, they were never troubled by a young, energetic Broad Haven team. Robbie Brace was powerful and agile in goal with his seemingly velcro laden gloves.

The game started fast on Manorbier's excellent pitch, but neither goalkeeper was troubled in the first 10 minutes.

Manorbier began knocking the ball around and a through ball by Josh Hawkes fell to the maverick Ricky Rees-Thomas, who curled a 20-yard shot out of the reach of the stretched goalkeeper, to make it 1-0 to the home team.

Fifteen minutes later, a through ball from fullback Austyn John to the quick Hawkes led to a penalty for Manorbier. Up stepped Robbie Thomas to slot it to the left of the diving goalie to make it 2-0.

Just before half-time, Manorbier's man of the season to date, David Blackwell, caressed a sweet finish from a Hawkes pass into the back of the net to make it 3-0 at the break.

Replenished with oranges, the second half was all Manorbier's; several chances hit the uprights and a few offsides went against, but, despite their efforts, the score remained 3-0 at the final whistle.

Nevertheless, several players shone for Manorbier, with James Hall, Marv Protheroe, Liam Robson, Ricky Rees Thomas and Robbie Brace the pick of the boys.

So spirits are high, a welcome three points which was thoroughly deserved - things are on the up for the 'bier!

Tomorrow (Saturday), Manorbier host Solva, and with their current squad, it should be three points in the bag for the home team.

The match ball was sponsored by Carl Griffiths, building contractor.
