Free breast cancer screening tests are now underway again in Tenby - as Breast Test Wales brings its mobile unit to the town for the fifth time. More than 2,000 postal invitations will be going out over the next couple of months to all women aged between 50 and 70 who are registered with GPs in Tenby and Saundersfoot. The NHS unit visits the town every three years, offering free breast cancer testing to women in the age group considered to be most at risk from the disease. Sited at The Green car park, formerly known as The Salterns, it will remain until late May offering the test - known as a mammogram - to women in the appropriate age group. Women will automatically receive a personal postal invitation inviting them to go along to the unit, where they can have the potentially life-saving test free of charge. The Norton Surgery in Tenby will be offered screening first, followed by The Medical Centre in Saundersfoot. Women registered with sub- surgeries will also be invited for screening. Alison Clement, screening promotion officer for Breast Test Wales, commented: "We are delighted to bring our service back to Tenby. We always have a very encouraging response from this particular part of Pembrokeshire. When we last visited the town, a total of 85 per cent of the women that we invited attended for screening. It would be nice to exceed that figure this time around." Mrs. Clement added that the programme had been expanded since the unit's last visit to Tenby - with women now receiving routine appointments up to the age of 70. Women aged 71 and above are still entitled to a free test, but need to telephone (01792) 459988 to make an appointment to visit the mobile unit.
