TONDU 30 pts
WHITLAND 24
Whitland travelled away to Tondu on Saturday and were very unlucky not to come away with a share of the spoils after another spirited performance in division one of the National League
Tondu were 10 points up after five minutes through a penalty by winger Dean Thomas in the third minute, and a try in the fifth by scrum-half Brendan Roach, whose quick tap penalty saw him go under the posts, for Thomas to add the two points.
Whitland hit back with successful penalties by outside-half Daniel Griffiths in the 10th and 25th minutes.
Tondu extended their lead in the 35th with a well taken try by their own number 10 Richard Dyke, which went unconverted.
Again, Griffiths cut the deficit with a penalty in the 38th minute to leave a half-time score of 15-9 to Tondu.
Whitland started the second half the better, and after good work by backs and forwards, captain and number eight Phil Morgan crashed over for a try in the sixth minute, Griffiths adding the two points for Whitland to lead 16-15.
Tondu hit back with another Brendon Roach try in the ninth minute, Thomas hitting the post with the conversion, before adding a penalty in the 12th minute.
Midway through the half, Tondu thought they had put the game out of Whitland's reach with a try by flanker St. John Towell, Thomas adding the two points from the conversion to give a 30-16 lead.
But Whitland did not lie down. In fact, they took control and in the 30th minute winger Matiake Mafi crashed over for a well deserved try.
Griffiths hit the post with the conversion attempt, but made no mistake in the 33rd minute with a penalty to give a scoreline of 30-24.
Whitland were now right back in it, but try as they might, they just failed to score at the end to pinch the game. Nevertheless, it was a great effort all round.
