Whitland 9 pts. Carmarthen Quins 17

Although winning the game by 17 points to nine, Carmarthen Quins knew they had been in a real battle and were pushed all the way by a very determined Whitland side, who showed 110 per cent commitment and effort and can hold their heads up high.

Gareth Cull gave the Division One West pace-setters the lead after eight minutes with a penalty, before centre Jason Harries somewhat luckily scored their first try, which Cull also converted.

Outside-half Carwyn Jones reduced the arrears for Whitland when he bagged their first points with a successful penalty after 14 mintues.

Fullback Anthony Evans again extended the Quins lead after 32 minutes with a well-worked try, which Cull converted, but Carwyn Jones cut the deficit with his second penalty, to leave the half-time score at 17 points to six.

The second half saw Whitland make every effort to break the Quins' defence, but they held firm, although Carwyn Jones was unlucky with the boot, hitting the post with one attempt and taking the paint off with another.

He did eventually kick his third penalty after 32 minutes, however, and if only the others had gone a few inches the other way, who knows, an upset may have been on the cards. But credit to both sides, it was a great game of rugby in difficult condtions.

The Borderers pack really did perform well, not only in the set-piece, but in the loose, while the backs tried everything to break through the Quins' strong defence.

The sponsors named prop Gareth Lloyd as man-of-the-match, but could have picked anyone, and no one could have objected.

The Quins did score a try early in the second half by second row Tom Powell, which was converted by hooker Lewis Pennington, before Whitland scored further tries by prop Dan McDermott and fullback Scott Newton, with replacement scrum-half Dafydd Evans converting one and the referee having to blow up 20 mintues early once the 50-point margin had been reached.

Whitland Seconds v Loughor Seconds

With a strong wind behind them, the visitors led at half-time by 12 points to seven, with outside-half Rhys Corcoran scoring two tries and Jason Roberts converting one.

Whitland's only points of the first half were scored by fullback Darren Rees with a try, which he also converted.

In the second half, it was all Whitland as they ran in four further tries by centre Anthony James, flanker Gareth Downs, scrum-half Dafydd Evans and outside-half Jonathan Thomas, with Darren Rees converting three.

Centre Wayne Morris also kicked two penalties, to leave the full-time score 39 points to 12 to the home side.

Whitland Youth v Neyland Youth

In very difficult conditions, the young Borderers eased to a comfortable 47 points to seven victory, scoring eight tries in the process.

They led 17-nil at half-time with tries by prop Brinley Toms, centre Lewis Thomas and scrum-half Aled Rees, with outside-half James Stephenson converting one.

In the second half, Whitland crossed Neyland's line five more times, the try scorers being Brinley Toms, Aled Rees, fullback Scott Newton and James Stephenson, who got two and was also successful with one conversion.

Neyland did score one try through Sion John, which Rob Davies converted.
