Narberth's John Phillips is about to begin a remarkable 33rd year as one of the leading world boxing referees.

John, who has refereed on most of the world's continents, began his international career in 1978 when he officiated at the England v Wales match in Hastings, Sussex.

Today, after an incredible 12,000-plus bouts and almost 100 internationals, as well as over 100 Welsh finals at all levels, he is set for his 40th year in Welsh Amateur Boxing.

During that time he has visited all the Nordic countries, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, as well as most other European countries, such as Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and France .

Most recently, John refereed the box-off in Gorseinon, Swansea, between Commonwealth gold medallist Dean McGoldrick and Dan Chapman to see who would go to the World Championships on August 7.

John has refereed at all the major championships during his illustrious career, World, European five times, Commonwealth and two Olympic qualifying events.

He starts his 40th year at the shows he enjoys best, though, around his beloved Wales. This is an important season for all Welsh boxers and officials, as next year sees everyone fighting to get a place on the Olympic team in London.

As Wales does not qualify as a single nation for the Olympics (which is a sore point to John), they have to fight alongside England, Scotland and Northern Ireland in order to quality as a Great Britain team - an Herculean task, but one they all hope to achieve. It's going to be an interesting and fulfilling season.

John's season starts on October 1, so watch out for him at all Pembrokeshire events and, if you would like to start as an official, why not have a chat with him, as he will gladly give his advice on how to become a member of the Welsh ABA.
