Tenby's record-breaking Boxing Day swimmers have splashed out to raise over £21,000 for charity by their 2005 dip. The best-ever entry of 572 bathers has helped to take the total collected in the 35 years of the event to more than £148,000. The huge crowds who enjoyed the crazy spectacle, with the fancy dress theme of Legends, contributed a magnificent £2,705 to the bucket collection. And swimmers pulled out all the stops in gaining sponsorship for their own good causes and those chosen by event organisers, the Tenby Sea Swimming Association. At the swim's recent presentation night, TSSA chairman Chris Osborne thanked everyone who had played a part in the event, which is one of Britain's top festive highlights. It is sponsored by Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire, who provided commemorative t-shirts for every bather. The Idris Morgan Cup for the highest-sponsored swimmer went to 10-year-old George Macbeth, of Tenby Junior School, who - with the help of his sister Anna - raised a remarkable £1,223.23 for their school. Heinz Holland raised £300 for TSSA charities to win the TSSA Shield. The Goscar Oscar for the best-sponsored group was won by TotalFinaElf, who raised £2,056 for the Children's Hospital for Wales. Other top-sponsored groups, who received Brass Monkey awards, were: the Harris and Morgan family; Tenby Junior School; Cross Inn, Penally; the Blackmore family; Nicole Evans and Julie Jenkins; the Dow, Davies and Beynon families; Friends of Manorbier School; the Phillips family; Anthony Wood, Warren Heaton and Chris Lambourne; the Hynes School of Irish Dancing; Mr. and Mrs. Alan Morris; Ann and Kirsty Keane; Tenby Tangent; Clarbeston Road AFC; and Jonathan and Heather Wood. Certificates were also presented to individuals raising over £100. Unclaimed awards and certificates can be collected from the Fourcroft Hotel, Tenby. The Caradoc James Trophy for the canoe race went to Luke Lewis, of Pembrokeshire Paddlers, with Ky Wright's team taking the raft race award. The swim's total raised of £21,047 was nearly 40 per cent up on last year. Of this, £17,661 went to charities chosen by swimmers, while TSSA donated as follows: £800 each - START, Jubilee Sailing Trust, Wales Air Ambulance; £400 each - Tenby Playgroup, Portfield School; £100 each - St. John Ambulance, Tenby Sea Cadets, Tenby Surf Lifesavers, Tenby Coastguards, Tenby RNLI and Pembrokeshire Paddlers.
