Tenby's brave Boxing Day bathers have taken the plunge to raise nearly £11,000 for charities and good causes by their 2006 dip. The record-breaking event attracted a record number of almost 600 swimmers and a huge crowd of spectators to the North Beach, where the fancy dress theme of Heroes and Villains inspired some entertaining costumes. Held for the first time under the banner of new sponsors, FBM Holidays, the swim saw some magnificent fund-raising efforts, particularly those for the charities chosen by event organisers, the Tenby Sea Swimming Association. This meant that £800 each could be presented to the Tenby Talking Newspaper, Tenby Sea Cadets, Macmillan Cancer Support, Arthritis Research and Mencap Cymru, with £100 each to St. John Ambulance, Tenby Rowing Club, Tenby Surf Lifesavers, Tenby Coastguard, Tenby RNLI and Pembrokeshire Paddlers. The grand total raised overall was £10,874, taking the sum raised over the 36 years of the event to nearly £160,000. At the swim's presentation night at the De Valence Pavilion on Monday, TSSA chairman Chris Osborne thanked everyone who had played a part in the continuing success of the event, which is now one of Britain's top festive highlights. The TSSA Shield for the highest-sponsored swimmer for TSSA charities went, for the second year in succession, to Heinz Holland, who collected £530. Jane Hewitt collected £750 for Spittal School and Church to win the Idris Morgan Cup for the highest individual sponsorship achievement, while Philip Lindley was the top sponsored junior swimmer. Brass Monkey awards were presented to groups raising over £100, with the Goscar Oscar trophy for the highest-sponsored group being won by father and daughter, John and Sian Reason-Jones, who raised the superb total of £1,105 for the Chemotherapy Unit at Withybush Hospital. The Caradoc James Trophy for the canoe race went to the Pembrokeshire Paddlers, while the raft race winners were Team Rees, receiving a power kite sponsored by Chevron Texaco. Certificates for all sponsorship collections of over £100 can be collected from the Fourcroft Hotel, The Croft.
