FIVE ARCHES 100 (14 pts.) ST. ISSELL'S 54 (0)
This was a comfortable win for the Stena Line sponsored Five Arches team in their penultimate league game of the season against a St. Issell's side that had beaten them on their own green earlier in the season.
The 46-shot winning margin was reflected across all four rinks, with Mike Gouldingay, playing against his old team-mates, turning in the best performance of the day with a 16-shot win.
Up front for Mike were Eamonn Maher and Aaron Lloyd, who had excellent games, as did Luke Rees, who took up the challenge of playing at third successfully, helping the rink to pick up 16 shots in the last seven ends.
Skip Lee Richards and his team of Ken Lloyd, Ken Williams and Jon Hubbard were all in good form and were never behind in their 10-shot victory.
An animated Tony Brown took to the green with the determination that he would gain revenge over the St. Issell's rink that beat him narrowly when they last met at Saundersfoot. Tony got his wish and gained his revenge, winning by 25 shots to 14. Ben Simmons, starting only his fourth game of the season, at lead had a very good game and must be disappointed that he, like Aaron Lloyd did not get more games. The ever-dependable Clive Webb and Ashley Hooper added their support in securing the 11-shot win.
Skip Roy Powling with his rink of Ron Hurlow, Tony Powling and Gwyn Beynon were in front from start to finish. A couple of early counts of fours and a five set them on the way to a nine-shot victory.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Issell's skips only) were as follows:
K. Lloyd, K. Williams, J. Hubbard, L. Richards 24; K. Rowland 14.
B. Simmons, C. Webb, A. Hooper, T. Brown 25; B. Wood 14.
E. Maher, A. Lloyd, L. Rees, M. Gouldingay 28; B. Lee 12.
R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 23; S. Howe 14.
FIVE ARCHES 56 (12 pts.) ST. THOMAS 38.5 (2)
With 15 ends played and with the rain lashing down, it was decided by both captains that it was too dangerous to continue playing with so much standing water on the green and to abandon the game.
As 15 ends were played, the scores counted as a result, with the Arches winning by 17.5 shots and so gaining revenge for the 14-0 defeat suffered at the hands of St. Thomas on their green in June.
A win was important and a strong team was selected for this last league game of the season as there was still an outside chance that the Arches could finish as runners-up to already promoted Neyland in league Division Two.
Skip Lee Richards and his team got off to a slow start, but all players quickly adjusted their game to the pace of the green to win by eight shots.
Roy Powling's rink struggled with the wet conditions and picked up just five shots in five ends to lose by eight. Roy and his boys do like the sun on their backs!
With Tony Brown having a day off, Ashley Hooper moved up to skip the rink. A couple of fours and a three saw them win by 15-7.5 against a St. Thomas rink that could only field three players.
On the outside rink, Graham Hill was back from his day off rejuvenated to lead his side to a 10-shot victory, but this margin could have been more had they not dropped six shots in the last two ends.
The Five Arches team and Tenby Bowling Club would like to thank Stena Line for their continued support and sponsorship this season.
The Arches selection committee would also like to thank all 25 players that have played in both the league and SA Brain Cup games this year.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Thomas skips only) were as follows:
L. Rees, K. Lloyd, J. Hubbard, L. Richards 18; N. Brown 10.
R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 5; L. Hoad 13.
S. Askew, C. White, C. Webb, A. Hooper 15; P. Howells 7.5.
E. Maher, B. Cloake, M. Gouldingay, G. Hill 18; H. Hicks 8.
Open Mixed Triples
The Open Mixed Triples resulted in a very fine and exciting two-day tournament, generously sponsored by the Giltar Hotel.
Competition secretary Mrs. Lynn Delabertouche, once again came up trumps with a feast of bowling, when the male bowlers joined the ladies, as a continuation of Ladies Open Week.
Sixteen triples, the perfect number, beavered away until the knock-out stage on the Friday.
Chairman John Baggott, officiating at the trophy award ceremony, congratulated Lynn on another fine exhibition of how to run a tournament successfully. He thanked the players for their continued support and the sponsors of this very popular tournament.
Mr. Malcolm Brace, executive of the Giltar Hotel, kindly took time off from his busy schedule to present the Keith Delabertouche Trophy to the winning trio, Rita and Wyndham Rees and Peter Jenkins, Brynhyfryd BC, Llanelli. Runners-up were Alwen Hughes, John Moffat and Brian Robinson from Saundersfoot BC, while third were Lynn Deli, Gerald Hewitt and Dai Spencer, (Tenby) and fourth were Vera Williams, Gwyn Beynon and Alison Redman (also Tenby).
Ladies Open pairs
Apologies from the Tenby Bowling Club to the Powling family for inadvertently failing to acknowledge the generous part sponsorship of the Tenby Bowling Club's Ladies Open Pairs tournament, by Millfield Consulting, which was played last week. Sponsorship is the lifeblood of modern sports and social clubs in the UK. We are most grateful for the continued support, especially from Gary Powling.
Historic day
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Tenby Bowling Club throw their hat into the steamy cauldron of the Welsh inter-club semi-finals and hopefully the final of the Carruthers Shield at Llandrindod Wells.
Tenby bowlers have produced some of the finest bowling this year as witnessed by many clubs in Pembroke county and beyond.
To reach the finals at the Welsh HQ is, in itself, historic. We are willing them to continue this excellence and bring home the 'shield' - good luck.
