CARRUTHERS SHIELD

Tenby 103

Ammanford Park 51

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were hosts to Ammanford Park in the Carruthers Shield last Saturday.

The 'Park' team consisted of a group of very experienced players, which included a majority of regular Gold Cup entrants, so the home green was a known quantity. Also they had reached the final of this competition four years ago.

Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, John Roberts and Andrew Muskett were drawn on the show rink. This contest was very close right up to the half-way stage, but with Webby 'walking on water' all game, the Tenby boys eased away to clinch the win by 11 shots.

Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Simon Evans and Pat Currie were all in outstanding form. Pitched against a talented international Park skip, Pat and his men dismantled the opposition by an incredible 14-shot victory; this included dropping a six on the penultimate end.

Luke Guymer, Mike Jackson, Peter Day and Paul Diment were also up for their clash. The Tenby four were always in control; any challenge issued by the opposition was quashed, resulting in a six-shot win for Paul.

Last up were Gerald Hewitt, Joe Richards, Craig Guymer and skip Phil Carpenter. The home rink grabbed an early lead and with excellent performances from all involved, they edged further and further away to record a magnificent 21-shot win.

This was a massive result for Tenby, who literally blew away the opposition by 52 shots, propelling them into the last 16 of the competition.

In the next round, Tenby have the long haul away to Presteigne. The match will be played on Saturday, July 18.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Ammanford Park skips only) were:

Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, John Roberts, Andrew Muskett 23; W. Owen 12.

Friendlies  Galore

Even the well populated Tenby Bowling Club were a little stretched to field sufficient rinks to entertain three touring sides in four days, but we managed with a little help from our neighbours.

Club captain, Tony Brown, and his selection team of Doris Brown and Mike Gouldingay have been kept very busy since April. They have successfully turned out many combinations of our members to ensure a winning team and have lost only two fixtures to date.

Results of recent games played on our magnificent bowling surface, freely acknowledged by all of our visitors, are as follows:

Tenby 87 Gosforth 111: These bowlers all the way from Northumbria turned out to be a very skilful crew and they certainly enjoyed the triples match on our green.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were:

D. Rees, R. Wilkins, L. Hilling 15; D. Ashworth 15.

A. Hooper, H. Meades, D. King Thomas 14; A. Johnson 12.

J. Taylor, H. Ebdon, M. Gouldingay 19; J. Ellison 15.

E. Maher, T. Brutnell, T. Brown 5; I. Thomson 27.

R. French, J. Hubbard, G. Beynon 16; R. Meuse 18.

S. Taylor, T. Powling, B. Barnikel 18; R. Hart-Jackson 24.

Tenby 80 Briton Ferry  BC 57: Tenby were hosts to friends from Briton Ferry Steel BC on Sunday.

They are regular visitors to our club, but mother nature deemed that the players were to spend most of the afternoon  in our very comfortable bar/lounge. The heavens opened at about the 10th end, resulting in play being abandoned.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were:

I. French, M. Draper, M. Skyrme, D. Brown 8; M. Jones 4.

A. Lloyd, H. Meades, B. Simmons, M. Gouldingay 23;  D. Stanford 8.

S. Taylor, B. Winstone, T. Powling, K. Lloyd. 7; G. Moar 16.

R. French, H. Ebdon, B. Cloake, T. Brown 14; B. Jenkins 6.

V. Roberts, G. Beeken, P. Barnikel, L. Evans 16; E. Edwards 12.

Tenby  107 Chameleons 75: These tourists from the Gloucester area were another group of regular visitors to the county of Pembroke.

Being short of players, we called on the Pembroke Dock club and the Pendine club for assistance, which was readily forthcoming.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were:

S. Taylor, H. Meades, J. Taylor, D. King Thomas 18; N. Fisher 14.

E. Maher, B. Winstone, B. Barnikel, D. Silcox 20; D. Rowe 10.

J. Baggott, H. Ebdon, M. Gouldingay, T. Brown 23; R. King 13.

D. James, G. Wilson, G. Hale, M. Dix 17; D. King 10.

The Gloucester girls and boys enjoyed the game immensely, confirmed by their announcement that they have already repeated the fixture for 2010.

Coaching Success

Thanks to our summery weather, Tenby Bowling Club were able to teach the basics of lawn green bowling to nearly 60 pupils this season from the Tenby Junior School.

These taster sessions, if followed up, usually accrue about half-a-dozen youngsters, girls and boys, who wish to take up the sport; an important factor in the future membership of our historic and very successful club.

A special thank you must go to the Welsh coaches in our club and to the children's teachers for their safe passage to and from the club on foot, a bit hairy in the busy traffic conditions.

The management committee have allocated a couple of rinks every Thursday evening, commencing at approximately 5 pm, for any interested youngster, girl or boy, to take extra coaching lessons with the aim of joining as a junior member. All equipment is supplied initially.
