BREWERS CUP

FIVE ARCHES 86 (10 pts) CASTLE 75 (4)

On Wednesday, July 11, Five Arches played host to the Castle in the Brewers Cup, which was not going to be a very easy game, even at home. Rink two saw H. Meads young L. Rees up front with J. Taylor as third skipped by D. King Thomas. At the interval they were 16 shots up and went on to win by a margin of 18 shots; also, as the highest scoring rink, they won the sweep again. Rink three saw K. Williams and L. Hilling both making their season's debut for the Arches. They both played very well, with R. Kennion as third and M. Gouldingay as skip. This rink also did well, being four shots up at the interval and eventually going on to win by 11 shots. Rink four saw K. Lloyd and J. Hubbard up front and T. Brutnell and G. Beynon at the back. The score was all level at 10 ends, but in the second half the Castle put on the pressure and went on to win by 13 shots. Rink five had H. Ebdon and young C. White up front and R. Hurlow and J. Moffat as third and skip, respectively. At 10 ends there was only two shots difference, but in the second half Castle put on that bit more pressure to win by a margin of six shots. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Castle skips only) were: H. Meads, L. Rees, J. Taylor, D. King Thomas 31; D. Summers 12. K. Williams, L. Hilling, R. Kennion, M. Gouldingay 26; W. Hall 15. K. Lloyd, J. Hubbard, T. Brutnel, G. Beynon 14; M. Hughes 27. H. Ebdon, C. White, R. Hurlow, J. Moffat 15; R. Absalom.

FIVE ARCHES 78 (4 pts) ST. THOMAS 80 (10)

On Thursday, July 12, Five Arches travelled to St. Thomas, which was a rearranged game owing to the bad weather, and what a game it turned out to be, with the result going down to the last wood of the game. Rink five had R. Kennion and T. Brutnell up front and R. Holly and J. Moffat as third and skip, respectively. Unfortunately, it wasn't their day at all. At the interval they were only four shots down, but things got gradually worse and eventually they went down by 20. Rink four saw S. Askew and J. Hubbard up front and M. Gouldingay as third, with M. Crockford as skip. At the interval they were six shots down and things did not get any better. But if it hadn't for M. Crockford, who was in very good form, the score would have been a lot worse. The Arches eventually went down by 10 shots. Rink two saw A. Hooper, who was on very good form, backed by R. Wilkins up front, with R. Hurlow third and G. Beynon as skip, who was also on form. They were in front from beginning to end and finished winning by 16 shots and also taking the sweep. Rink three featured K. Lloyd and young L. Rees, who is now a regular member of the team, along with T. Brown as third and R. Powling as skip. The Arches were in front all the way and never looked like losing the rink. But with all the other rinks finished, St. Thomas were in front by one shot. R. Powling, with his last wood, picked up the jack for two shots, only for his opposite number R. Harris to produce a perfect wood to knock Roy's wood clean off to take the game by two shots. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St Thomas skips only) were: A. Hooper, R. Wilkins, R. Hurlow, G. Beynon 29; W. Price 13. K. Lloyd, L. Rees, T. Brown, R. Powling 24; R. Harries 13. S. Askew, J. Hubbard, M. Gouldingay, M. Crockford 15; P. Harries 25. R. Kennion, T. Brutnell, R. Holly, J. Moffat 10; N. Brown 30.

FIVES ARCHES 69 (1 pt) PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 98 (13)

On Saturday, Five Arches travelled to Pembroke Dock Pater for the last fixture with them this year. This is one of those fixtures the Arches have always enjoyed and for a change the weather was good. Rink one saw S. Askew backed by J. Hubbard, with M. Gouldingay as third and M. Crockford as skip. Mike stated before the game he had been drawn against the same skip every time and lost. Unfortunately, this was no exception, and after a very tight game the Arches went down by three shots. Rink two saw R. Kennion and K. Williams up front, with R. Hurlow and G. Beynon as third and skip. Unfortunately, they never seemed to get into the game because, after being four shots down on the ninth end, they got stuck on four for the next nine ends, eventually going down by 13 shots. Rink three saw K. Lloyd and young B. Cloake up front, with R. Wilkins and R. Powling as third and skip. This was a very close fought game all the way through and at 11 ends it was 10 each; and in the end, it was a very well deserved draw, 21 shots each. Rink four saw H. Meads and young L. Rees up front and J. Taylor and D. King Thomas at the back end. This was also a very close fought game and at 11 ends there was only one shot separating the teams. Eventually the Arches went down by four shots. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pembroke Dock Pater skips only) were: S. Askew, J. Hubbard, M. Gouldingay, M. Crockford 17; M. Ronald 20. R. Kennion, K. Williams, R. Hurlow, G. Beynon 9; J. Turley 22. K. Lloyd, B. Cloake, R. Wilkins, R. Powling 21; S. James 21. H. Meads, L. Rees, J. Taylor, D. King Thomas 22; S. Davies 26.

TENBY 82 BRITON FERRY BC 105

On Sunday, Tenby played host to a mixed team from Briton Ferry in a friendly match. It turned out to be a very enjoyable afternoon and, although the weather was a bit damp, luckily the rain kept off until after the game. Unfortunately, Mrs. Berni, of Briton Ferry, had a nasty fall during the game and had to be ferried by ambulance to Withybush Hospital. Lynne Delabertouche also went to Withybush in her car to see if she was alright (thank you Lynne). Fortunately she was released and was able to travel home on the coach. Let's hope she gets better soon. Captain Mike Gouldingay stated after the game that he was very proud of all the juniors who had taken part, not only for their performance, but their etiquette and behaviour. Rink one saw L. Goldwait and M. Spencer up front with M. Skyrme and L. Evans. At 10 ends they were 16 shots up, but then they got stuck on 16 for the next six ends, before going on to win by one shot. Rink two saw R. Hensman and Y. White up front with D. Brown and E. Shaw. This was a very impressive performance by all, going on to win by 12 shots and also the highest scoring rink. Rink three saw J. Taylor and B. Simmons up front with A. Watts and M. Gouldingay. This was a very close fought game all the way through, with Tenby winning by one shot. Rink four saw C. White and C. Roberts up front with T. Brutnell and B. Barnikel. Although they got off to a slow start, they gradually came back into the game, eventually going down by seven shots. Rink five saw V. Roberts and H. Ebdon with G. Beeken and G. Beynon as skip. Unfortunately, they never seemed to get into the game, eventually going down by 17 shots. Rink six saw N. Hensman and D. Rees up front with L. Rees and R. Wilkins. They also had trouble getting into the game, eventually going down by 13 shots. But at the end of the day, it was a friendly, so the score did not really matter; it's the friendship on the green and after the game that matters. They were very good company and have already agreed to come back next year. R.F. Diment Cup

NEYLAND 70 TENBY 79

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team travelled to Neyland to play the quarter-finals of the R. F. Diment Cup last week. With captain Dai Spencer absent, it was Pat Currie who took over the armband. Pat and his rink of Joe Richards, Jon Webb and Simon Evans were first up. The Tenby rink started off slowly and from then on just could not get their noses in front. Final outcome was a disappointing six-shot defeat for Pat. Neil Dickinson, Tony Brown, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day were drawn on rink three. Peter and his men got out of the blocks quickly, but a count of five against, pulled Neyland back into it. Level after 19 ends, the Tenby four kept their composure to close out the game by five shots. Doug Silcox, Ray Holly, Terry Howells and skip Andrew Muskett were involved in a very tight battle. There was nothing between the two rinks throughout the contest. Three shots down going into the last end, Andrew and his men fought back to retrieve the deficit, finishing with an honourable draw. Ashley Hooper, Adam Hensman, John Baggott and skip Paul Diment were always in control in their match. Tight early on, Paul and his men eased away in the second half to run out 10-shot winners. Tenby now progress to the semi-finals of the cup with a possible encounter against the Five Arches, if they come through their quarter-final. Rink scores (Tenby first, Neyland skips only) were: Ashley Hooper, Adam Hensman, John Baggott, Paul Diment 23; B. Arran 13. Doug Silcox, Ray Holly, Terry Howells, Andrew Muskett 19; G. Robson 19. Joseph Richards, Jon Webb, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 15; R. Evans 21. Neil Dickinson, Tony Brown, Terry Preston, Peter Day 22; K. Wainright 17.

Division One

Tenby 75 (4 pts.) Haverfordwest 88 (10)

It was back to league action for the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team last Saturday. High-flying Haverfordwest were the visitors, so Tenby knew they would have to be on top form for this encounter. Rink one consisted of Ashley Hooper, Tony Brown, John Baggott and skip Paul Diment. A poor start saw the foursome slip well behind, never to be recovered as the inspired Haverfordwest rink cruised to a damaging 15-shot victory. Joe Richards, Jon Webb, Simon Evans and skip Pat Currie were on rink two. Pat and his men trailed in the early stages, but a six on the 19th end gave them a cushion to close the game out by a well- needed five shots. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly and Terry Howells were skipped by Andrew Muskett. Another poor start resulted in a first half deficit of 15 shots, but the Tenby four did pull their socks up a bit in the latter stages. The gap though was unassailable and eight shots was the losing margin. Last up were Neil Dickinson, Doug Silcox, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day. Always in front from the off, Peter's rink maintained control to register a steady five-shot victory. The final outcome was a disappointing 13-shot defeat for Tenby, which severely dents their title aspirations. Rink scores (Tenby first, Haverfordwest skips only) were: Ashley Hooper, Tony Brown, John Baggott, Paul Diment 13; Paul Jenkins 28. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly, Terry Howells, Andrew Muskett 19; P. A. John 25. Joseph Richards, Jon Webb, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 24; C. Jones 19. Neil Dickinson, Doug Silcox, Terry Preston, Peter Day 21; R. O'Leary 16.
