Carruthers Shield

Tenby 88 Sully 62

The Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were back in Carruthers action last weekend. After emerging top of their group from the Pembrokeshire section, it was now down to the knock-out stages. Opponents for the day were Sully from the Cardiff area, but with home advantage, captain Dai Spencer and his team were quietly confident Ron Hurlow, Ashley Hooper, John Baggott and skip Paul Diment were in fine form in their contest. Racing into an early lead, the Tenby four were always in control and eventually finished up six- shot winners. Special thanks to Ron Hurlow, who stepped in at the last minute and excelled at lead. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel and Terry Preston were skipped by Peter Day on rink one. Peter and his men fought their way into the lead and from then on, never relinquished it, running out winners by six shots. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly, Jon Webb and skip Andrew Muskett were up next. The Tenby foursome got off to a poor start and trailed 9-1 after four ends, but Andrew and his men did not panic, clawing their way back into the match by the halfway stage. The momentum was with the Tenby men towards the latter stages and they managed to cross the finish line three shots to the good. A similar scenario was occurring on the next rink, skipped by Pat Currie. Seven-nil in arrears early on, Pat, ably assisted by Stewart Askew, Jo Richards and Terry Howells, stepped up a gear in the run in, to end 11-shot winners and the accolade of top rink of the day. The final match outcome was a resounding 26-shot victory and passage into the last 32 of the Carruthers for Tenby. Tomorrow (Saturday), the Tenby team travel to Mountain Ash for the next round, to play Nixons, who from reports are a very efficient young team. Tenby will once more have to be on top form if they wish to progress further. Rink scores (Tenby first, Sully skips only) were: Ron Hurlow, Ashley Hooper, John Baggott, Paul Diment 23; B. Griffiths 17. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 22; J. Frayne 19. Stuart Askew, Joseph Richards, Terry Howells, Pat Currie 23; P. Rogers 12. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 20; C. Williams 14.

BREWERS CUP

FIVE ARCHES 75 (12 pts.) PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 58 (2)

On Wednesday, June 6, Five Arches travelled to Pembroke Dock Pater for their third game of the season. It is one that everyone looks forward to because of the very friendly atmosphere on and off the green, and this game was no exception. Rink one featured J. Taylor and young L. Rees, who had a outstanding game, with M. Gouldingay at third and D. K. Thomas as skip, who both played well. They went on to win by five shots. On rink two, K. Lloyd and N. Hensman up front with the usual G. Beynon as third and R. Powling as skip, had complete control over their opponents and went on to win very comfortably by 17 shots. Rink three saw another junior having an outstanding game, namely B. Cloake, who was playing second to R. Kennion, and with R. Wilkins and J. Moffat as skip, they also went on to win by six shots. Rink four saw J. Hubbard as lead, with A. Hensman, another junior as second, and T. Brown and M. Crockford at the back end. Unfortunately, they never seemed to get into the game and went down by 11 shots. Captain M. Gouldingay, in his speech after the game, congratulated all the juniors on their performance and etiquette on and off the green and said they were a credit to the sport. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pembroke Dock Pater skips only) were: J. Taylor, L. Rees, M. Gouldingay, D. K. Thomas 17; S. James 12. K. Lloyd, N. Hensman, G. Beynon, R. Powling 30; J. Turley 13. R. Kennion, B. Cloake, B. Wilkins, J. Moffat 18; S. Davies 12. J. Hubbard, A. Hensman, T. Brown, M. Crockford 10; M. Ronald 21.

FIVE ARCHES 96 (14 pts.) BORDERERS 50 (0)

On Wednesday, June 13, the Five Arches had their second game this season against the Borderers and once again the Arches fielded a team which included three juniors playing their hearts out. The Borderers also have a lot of youngsters in their squad and it can only be good for the sport to see so many taking up the game. On rink two, H. Meades and T. Brutnell were up front, with G. Beynon and R. Powling at the back end. All had a very comfortable game and at 10 ends they were three shots up. By the end of the match they stretched their lead to win by 11 shots. Rink three saw R. Kennion and young B. Cloake up front, along with R. Wilkins and J. Moffat at the back. They, too, had an easy game and they never looked in any danger of being beaten. They ran out comfortable winners by 10 shots at the close of the play. Rink four again saw J. Taylor at lead with young L. Rees at second having another outstanding game (in fact, the way he is playing at the moment he could end up with a regular Five Arches place). T. Brown also had a good game, but as for the skip, well people are actually offering to pay so they can play with D. King Thomas, because he keeps winning the sweep! Their rink went on to win by 17 shots. Rink five saw C. White playing his third game in the league and he did not let the side down. He played very well, with J. Hubbard as second, who lately has been in good form. Teamed with M. Donoghue and M. Crockford, they all had excellent games and were never really threatened. They were in front from start to finish and went on to win by 12 shots. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Borderers skips only) were: H. Meades, T. Brutnell, G. Beynon, R. Powling 22; S. Price 11. R. Kennion, B. Cloake, R. Wilkins, J. Moffat 23; D. Richards 13. J. Taylor, L. Rees, T. Brown, D. King Thomas 27; D. Lewis 10. C. White, J. Hubbard, M. Donoghue, M. Crockford 24; D. Jenner 6.

DIVISION TWO

FIVE ARCHES 75 (11 pts.) ST. ISSELL'S 67 (3)

Last Sunday, was the Arches' first visit to St. Issell's this season and what a wonderful afternoon it turned out to be. Although the forecast was for rain, it was just the opposite. As usual, it was a lovely sunny afternoon, with the green running very well and a very good friendly atmosphere also resulted in a very close game from start to finish. Rink two had R. Kennion and J. Best up front, who both had a battle getting into the game, with M. Gouldingay as third, who had an outstanding game, and J. Moffat, who also had a job on his hands keeping up with J. Evans, who was in good form. At 13 ends, it was all level at 10 shots, but then the Arches got stuck on 12 for the following six ends and in the end went down by six shots. Rink three saw H. Ebdon playing his first game this season and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself, with J. Hubbard as second and J. Wilkins and M. Crockford at the back end. At 10 ends, Mike was six shots up, but by the 19th end St. Issell's had pulled back to go four in front, only for Mike's team to force a draw with a last minute fightback. Rink four saw K. Lloyd and T. Brown up front, both having a good games, with G. Beynon and R. Powling both performing well at the back. It was a very close fought battle all the way through and even though they were two shots behind at the interval, they came back well in the second half to win by a margin of five shots. Rink five saw H. Meades and young L. Rees both having good games. Luke is now becoming a regular player in the side, and along with G. Hill and D. King Thomas as skip, they all had a fantastic game. At the 11th end it was all level at 10 shots, but after tea it all changed. Dave went on in the end to not only win the game by nine shots, but also claimed the sweep - again! Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Issell's skips only) were: R. Kennion, J. Best, M. Gouldingay, J. Moffat 14; J. Evans 20. H. Ebdon, J. Hubbard, R. Wilkins, M. Crockford 17; R. Pring 17. K. Lloyd, T. Brown, G. Beynon, R. Powling 20; S. Dick 15. H. Meades, L. Rees, G. Hill, K. King Thomas 24; L. Davies 15.

MEYRICK OWEN

goscar 18 FISHGUARD 22

Goscar just missed out on a win, at home, in their Meyrick Owen clash with Fishguard. At half-time Goscar were leading 15-7. However, after tea, the Fishguard team moved into top gear, drew level and then pulled away. For Goscar, Ray Hine played lead, Brian Winstone second, while and there was a father and son duo playing third and fourth, namely Adam Hensman and dad Neil as skip. The rink was disappointed to have lost the game in the second half.
