Autumn Series
It is that time of year again when our hopes are high. Will they be dashed, are we as good as we hear we are, are the regions setting the pace, or is it a false dawn? Yes, it's rugby season, the game of our nation, and the sport that gets you into more arguments than anything else. All the autumn internationals will be shown live in the club and 'guess the score' will be on display again for all you rugby 'buffs'. The first game is against Australia, and we asked our former rugby players for their thoughts on the outcome of the series. Roy Powling, surely amongst one of the best post- war players that Tenby United has produced, thought that Wales had a good chance in all four games, citing the new success that the regions had found and the fact that a lot of our players had returned from injury, and were hitting peak form. Dai King Thomas, a more than useful scrum-half in his time, playing for Carmarthen, and one season with Llanelli, going on a tour with such luminaries as Gerald Davies, John Llelau and Norman Gale, all past Welsh internationals, felt we would have to pull out all the stops to beat the Antipodean countries. Although with everyone fit and a fair share of the ball, it would be anyone's game. And how many members knew that Ron Hurlow was a star fullback for the United Seconds - a man of many parts is our Ron. His verdict was that Gareth Jenkins would give all the squad a game, keeping the strongest side to face the All Blacks. He reckons we are in with a shout. The club will be open at 1 pm, so why not come and enjoy the hywl. Committee Meeting
This will now be held on Tuesday, November 7, at 7 pm, being brought forward a week due to the AGM being held the following Wednesday, November 15, starting at 7 pm. Meetings all over the place!
Bonus Ball
The two lucky winners this week were Vera Burrows and Julian Davies. My View
This week we ask Doug Silcox for his thoughts on our questions. He moved here some years ago from Cardiff with wife Irene, after holidaying in the area prior to the permanent move. A retired civil servant, he is a past treasurer of the club. What do you like most about the weekend? It is nice to spend an evening with my dear wife. What do you most like about living in the area? The relaxed laid back atmosphere compared to the city, the absence of traffic fumes and noise, replaced by the peace and tranquillity and the beautiful coastline and countryside. What three people would you invite for a meal? Sir Mortimore Wheeler, who introduced me to the subject of history and archaeology. The Emperor Vespasian, one of the finest Roman emperors, and Alexander the Great, a great general and political leader. Who do you most admire? King George VI, who along with his wife, stimulated and supported the British people during World War Two. What is your favourite food? Anything sweet. My favourite meal is pork sausages, peas and creamed potatoes, with thick onion gravy, followed by trifle. What do you find most relaxing? Watching cricket on TV, reading, philately and sitting in a deckchair watching Rene gardening!!
