Milford 65 (3 pts.) Tenby 83 (11)
Last Saturday, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team travelled to Milford Haven for their eighth league match of the season. As reported last week, Tenby were on a successful winning run and this contest could have been a potential banana skin for the in-form team. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day were first up on rink one. Peter and his men have been the consistent rink all season, and once again all put in a solid performance, to ensure that Tenby got off to a good start with an impressive 15-shot victory. On rink three, returning skip Jon Webb and his rink of Doug Silcox, Joseph Richards and John Moffat were also in good form. With young Joseph again shining, the Tenby lads cruised to a six-shot victory. A much closer match ensued on skip Ray Holly's rink. Dai Spencer, Mike Gouldingay and Peter Hooper had to dig deep to keep off the strong Milford challenge. With the Tenby rink a little off the pace in the closing stages, skip Ray Holly used all his years of experience to put in a massive last six-end run, hauling his men back from the brink to earn an honourable draw. Last up was captain Andrew Muskett, aided by Roy Kennion, Ashley Hooper and Dave Robb. Andrew's men never really got started and were always trying to play catch-up. 19-4 down at one stage, Andrew and his men managed to get their game together in the closing stages and turned it around to a respectable three-shot defeat. Another 11 points gained and the winning streak continues for Tenby as they now move up to fourth in the county championship. With no league programme this weekend due to the County Finals, the Tenby men can have a well earned rest as the following week they have a gruelling five games in eight days. Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only): Roy Kennion, Ashley Hooper, Dave Robb, Andrew Muskett 18; E. Sturley 21. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 26; B. Howells 11. Doug Silcox, Joseph Richards, John Moffat, Jon Webb 19; T. Ellyatt 13. Dai Spencer, Mike Gouldingay, Peter Hooper, Ray Holly 20; R. Thomas 20
Tenby Five Arches 71 St. Thomas 74 This Brewers Cup encounter was lost over two dramatic ends on Dai King Thomas's rink, when they tragically dropped 12 shots after leading for most of the game. Joe Richards again had a good all round game. It was debut time for young Luke Rees and didn't he play well; he certainly has the ability to go all the way. Stuart Askew had a great game at lead, and it was welcome back for Tony Brown after a six weeks absence. Mike and his crew eased to a 10-shot win. It was hard going for Rob Wilkins and his rink as they lost by 11 shots. Gwyn Beynon produced the goods again with a five-shot victory. The Five Arches are sponsored by Stena Line. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Thomas skips only): S. Askew, L. Rees, T. Brown, M. Crockford 23; T. Harries 13. L. Hilling, H. Meades, T. Shaw, R. Wilkins 10; R. Lewis 21. H. Ebdon, K. Williams, J. Taylor, G. Beynon 20; P. Jenkins 15. J. Richards, B. Winstone, K. Lloyd, D. King Thomas 18; W. George 25.
Fishguard 78 Tenby Five Arches 69 It was always going to be a hard tussle up at Abergwaun, but the Stena sponsored Five Arches believed they should have come away with more points than they did. Yet again they depended on Gwyn Beynon and his rink to garner us the points. He is currently having a fantastic season, and another who has amazed the team is Jim Taylor who is relishing his role as third to the 'little general'. They produce the 'goods' week in, week out, while up front for Gwyn, Ray Hine and Ken Lloyd are playing together as a great pair. The rink came home by two shots. It was the final few ends that again cost likeable Dai King Thomas his game as the opposition scored 10 shots over the last four ends. It was the middle patch of the game that the home side scored 15 shots without reply against Roy Powling and his crew, but sticking at it, they rallied to only go down by four in the end. A great rally on the final end, in which they picked up seven shots, saw Mike Crockford and his men go down by only one shot. The home green certainly caused problems for some of the Seasiders' players, but it is something that visiting players have to address. We are spoilt at Tenby with the wonderful true surface that Chris Jenkins produces, whereas some of the surfaces away are not quite as true. Still a few games to go and we must hope we can pick up some more points and close the gap on Pendine. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Fishguard skips only): L. Hilling, T. J. Hubbard, T. Shaw, D. King Thomas 17; T. Jones 23. T. Brutnell, T. Powling, R. Wilkins, R. Powling 15; K. Grace 19. R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, G. Hill, M. Crockford 19; D. Hughes 20. R. Hine, K. Lloyd, J. Taylor, G. Beynon 18; R. Thomas 16.
Tenby 118 Wimbledon 105 A plethora of matches over the past week started with the arrival of these bowlers from London. Tony Shaw's foursome were up against it from the start, but stuck to the plot manfully throughout. Captain for the day Bert Barnikel was another rink that found the going tough, but Audrey Owens had a great game as the rink went down by 11 shots. Needless to say, Gwyn Beynon and his troops romped home by 16 shots, with counts of a five and four 4s. Eileen Shaw was in great form for Dai Robb's rink, with Gerry Brutnell also showing up well as they secured a nine-shot win. Mike Gouldingay and his crew won by 12 shots, while Vera Williams and her rink went down by one shot. Rink scores (Tenby first, Wimbledon skips only): R. Thake, V. James, T. Brutnell, G. Tenby 100 Phoenix, cardiff 105 These tourists made up from clubs in the Cardiff area produced a high-scoring game. Despite scoring 12 shots in the middle of the game, Tony Shaw and his rink finally went down by 15. The home side paraded five of the juniors from the Junior Academy. Dana Rogers was one playing lead to Dai Robb, for whom Gerry Brutnell performed well. But the rink went down by 11 shots. One of the youngsters who had a great game was Rachel Hensman, and with Gwyn and Pauline playing the shots, the foursome won by 12. Husband Bert on rink one finally succombed by three shots at the end. Played in scorching temperatures, it took its toll of Reg Thake who retired at half-time. Luke Rees was another junior playing and, supported by Val James, who had a great game along with Doug Silcox, Mike and his rink scored a scorching 22-shot win. Another Mike, Gouldingay this time, could only manage single shots to go down by 10. Liz Goldwait and Adam Hensman made up the rest of the juniors in the game and all played their part. Rink scores (Tenby first, Phoenix skipos only): M. Draper, R. Hensman, G. Beynon, P. Barnikel 22; R. Hill 10. D. Rogers, P. Jones, G. Brutnell, D. Robb 10; G. Knox 27. L. Rees, V. James, D. Tenby 130 Chameleons 96 We welcomed back these cheerful bowlers from around the Gloucester area. Mind, the home side were not in welcoming mode, as they scored a resounding 34-shot win. With late replacement Ashley Hooper drafted in as third and Doris Brown and Ken Lloyd performing well up front, 'our Dai', alias Dave King Thomas, was able to control things from the back in his inimitable fashion, recording 17-shot win. It was a great fightback by Bert and his crew that saw them score 10 shots over the last few ends to come out with a commendable draw. Only allowing the visitors to score on seven ends, Mike and his rink came home by 24 shots. Elaine Shaw again had an outstanding game at lead, while Tony Brown played some great shots. There was a lot of laughter and noise on rink four, where John Moffat and Pauline Barnikel helped the rink to a five-shot advantage. The man is human after all. With threequarters of his normal league rink with him, the 'little general' actually lost! Never mind, in the games that really matter, Gwyn Beynon can be relied on to win. Vi Roberts had a good game in Dai Robb's 10-shot loss, but playing nearest the pavilion and bantering with the spectators obviously affected his game! The club has never played so many games in such a short peiod of time. One Brewers Cup game and four friendlies in a week, throw in two away league games, and it is obvious the pre-season fitness programme has paid off! Rink scores (Tenby first, Chameleons skips only): P. Jones, K. Williams, P. Barnikel, J. Moffat 18; B. Eley 13. R. Hine, M. Draper, J. Taylor, G. Beynon 19; R. Wiles 21. V. Roberts, D. Rees, D. Silcox, D. Robb 14; M. Barker 24. H. Meades, M. Robb, T. Shaw, B. Barnikel 19; B. Crawley19. D. Brown, K. Lloyd, A. Hooper, D. King Thomas 28; J. Headford 11. E. Shaw, C. Roberts, T. Brown, M. Crockford 32; L. Fisher 8. Juniors Day
The green will be taken over tomorrow (Saturday) by the club's Junior Academy. The whole day will be taken up with singles, pairs etc, for some great prizes generously donated by members. Food will be provided and the whole proceedings will culminate in the prize-giving in the pavilion. If you want to see some of the stars of the future, then make sure you're around on Saturday.
