Five Arches 74 St. Thomas 59 For their first home league match of the season, the Seasiders certainly showed some early season nerves, with several players off their game. However, as the game progressed, the home side got into their stride and ended up comfortable winners to start their campaign off on the right note. Again it was strong finishes that did the business. One rink which came came from behind to register a three-shot win was that skipped by Dave Robb. Again the foundation was laid with Ted Brutnell and Joe Richards doing the work up front. A lot depended on Graham Hill and Dai King Thomas to keep their foursome in the game and the fact that they kept the deficit to six is credit to them. From the 13th end, Roy and his crew did not let the visitors score while they themselves racked up 15 shots without reply. Gwyn Beynon had a steady game throughout, while Ron Hurlow certainly shone in the second half. Newcomer Roy Kennion, playing his first game as third in the league, had a great all-round game, to see the home rink home by eight shots. When everyone is firing on all cylinders, the Arches have the makings of a fair side, but practice is imperative. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Thomas skips only): R. Hurlow, R. Wilkins G. Beynon, R. Powling 23; R. Harries 11. R. Hine, J. Hubbard, R. Kennion, M. Crockford 20; H. Davies 12. D. Rees, J. Taylor, G. Hill, D. King Thomas 14; N. Brown 20. T. Brutnell, J. Richards, T. Powling, D. Robb 19; B. George 16.

Saundersfoot 90 (12 pts.) Tenby 78 (2)
The first league game of the season for the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team could not have been a tougher prospect, as they had to travel to Saundersfoot to play the current champions. With a few new faces in the side captain Andrew Muskett was hoping his men would stand up to the battle ahead. Rink one was skipped by Peter Day who was involved in a very tight tussle. His rink of Doug Silcox, Bert Barnikel and Terry Preston all put in good performances, which involved keeping it tight for the first half. Unfortunately, they dropped two consecutive counts of three in the second half which was to be the deciding factor. They finally succumbed to a five-shot defeat. Neil Dickinson, Lee Richards, Jon Webb and skip Terry Howells were up against in-form Saundersfoot skip Steve Poole. Terry and his men were always behind from the outset, in fact at one stage they were 10 shots behind. A sterling effort by all over the last five ends saw them only go down by a commendable two shots. Captain Andrew Muskett and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Mike Gouldingay and Peter Hooper had what can only be said as a disappointing afternoon. A disastrous six-end period saw them drop a total of 20 shots which was never going to be recoverable. To be fair, the Tenby lads never let their heads drop and rallied towards the end, finally bowing out to a 15-shot defeat. Highlight of the day was Pat Currie and his rink of Dai Spencer, Ashley Hooper and Ray Holly. With impressive performances throughout and Pat on top form, the rink managed to finish with an excellent 10-shot victory. So the final result ended up a well-deserved 12- shot victory for Saundersfoot. Captain Andrew was happy with his team's commitment, but suggested a little bit of fine tuning might be needed to improve the overall shape of the team for future matches. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby have another difficult 'away day' at Pembroke Dock in the Carruthers Shield. Rink scores (Tenby first, Saundersfoot skips only) were: Gerald Hewitt, Mike Gouldingay, Peter Hooper, Andrew Muskett 18; J. Roberts 33. Doug Silcox, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 16; D. Poole 21. Neil Dickinson, Lee Richards, Jon Webb, Terry Howells 19; S. Poole 21. Dai Spencer, Ashley Hooper, Ray Holly, Pat Currie 25; P. Diment 15.
