Tenby 91 (12 pts) Pembroke Dock 66 (2)
Last Saturday, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby side entertained high-flying Pembroke Dock in a crucial league encounter. With only a few fixtures remaining this season, and with the league still undecided, every game is a must win situation for all the sides in contention at the top.
Captain Andrew Muskett and his rink of Luke Guymer, Reg Thake and Jon Webb were matched against Dock skip Harry Hangar. Andrew's men raced into a 12-3 lead, but unfortunately they shot themselves in the foot by dropping three counts of four. This let the Dock boys back in contention and Andrew and his men finally succumbed to a close fought one-shot defeat.
Rink three consisted of Gerald Hewitt, Mike Crockford, Peter Hooper and skip Terry Howells. This was another close match, but the Tenby foursome managed to ease in front after 10 ends and with good performances throughout deservedly ran out four-shot winners.
Skip Pat Currie and his rink of Neil Dickinson, Graham Hill and Craig Guymer put in yet another impressive performance for the Tenby side. Pat and his men controlled their match from the outset and, although they dropped a couple of shots near the end, their four-shot victory was never in doubt.
Top rink of the day was the impressive Peter Day and his rink of Dai Spencer, Lee Richards and Terry Preston. With the 'Tudor Way Massive' solid up front and Terry playing his full repertoire of shots, Peter sailed through to a comfortable 18-shot win. The result was that Tenby managed a creditable 25-shot winning margin, adding another valuable 12 points to their league campaign. Captain Andrew praised his squad for yet another fine performance, but emphasised that this weekend was the 'big one', with both Whitland and Haverfordwest the visitors.
Andrew would like to remind the Tenby players that tonight is the Open Night at 6 pm - please attend. Rink scores (Tenby first, Pembroke Dock skips only) were:
Luke Guymer, Reg Thake, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 18; H. Hangar 19. Gerald Hewitt, Mike Crockford, Peter Hooper, Terry Howells 18; L. Davies 14. Neil Dickinson, Graham Hill, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 21; B. Dowling 17. Dai Spencer, Lee Richards, Terry Preston, Peter Day 34; R. Jones 16.
TENBY BOWLING CLUB 128 TENBY GOLF CLUB 89
This annual fixture is played between the two clubs in memory of Arthur Ormond, who was president of both during his lifetime.
Many of the golfers express how much they enjoy the game of the bowls. How we wish some of them would take up the sport, as, like many of the bowlers, they have played rugby, cricket and football in their younger days.
As always, there was loads of laughter, leg-pulling and amusement on the green, and amongst those watching as well.
The visitors were given a 12-shot start on each rink, although Pat Currie and his men, mindful of how close it was last year, only gave the visitors a 10-shot advantage, but Neil Dickinson, who plays lead for Pat in the league, had other ideas. Cheered on by Pat Rees, Simon Rossiter and Simon Rowell, the rink only lost by one shot, although admittedly it was a great bowl from Pat that eventually won the game... or did he lose it? It's still a matter for debate, with the golfers also claiming victory!
Tenby captain Andrew Muskett was in great form as he and his crew showed no mercy in racking up two sixes, a five and two counts of four, to win by 16 shots.
Any of the bowlers who drew Viv John knew they were in for a fight, and so it proved for Rob Wilkins and his rink. With Peter Rossi and his 'buddy' Phil Goodridge giving Viv great support, they ended all square.
New recruit Lloyd Wilton certainly enjoyed his first competitive game for the club. He was pitched into league action for the Five Arches on the next day due to some late withdrawals.
Another ex-bowler, Phil 'Watty' Watkins, with great encouragement from Steve Amos and the two Ormond brothers, captain Richard and Robert, had the audacity to take a count of five from the always competitive Terry Howells, but with Gold Cup semi- finalist Dai Spencer and the encouraging Gerald Hewitt and 'Mister Dependable' Denis Watkins in the ranks, they squeezed home by one shot.
It was father against son as Sam lined up against Gary McNeilly, and the latter certainly showed some nice touches to make sure the 'old maestro' was at his best, which needless to say he was.
Paul Heywood plays with such passion and commitment, we only wish he would take up bowls, a sport he readily admits he enjoys immensely. If he did, after only a few games, he could play skip, such is his intensity and cajoling of his rink. All the bowlers played well to eventually come home by 21 shots.
The evening finished off with Richard Ormond presenting club captain Mike Crockford with the magnificent glass bowl that the family had purchased in memory of their father. A Golf Club tie was also presented to Tenby captain Andrew Muskett.
Alun and Alison Redman did everyone proud with a great barbecue, for which they were warmly thanked. A great evening.
Rink scores (Bowling Club first) were as follows: L. Richards, H. Meades, J. Webb, A. Muskett 33; P. Keating, A. Keating, M. Morris, T. Rogers 17. G. Hewitt, D. Watkins, D. Spencer, T. Howells 26; R.
