Last Sunday, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby side had to travel to Pendine for a league match, having played the same side at home the previous week. The Tenby lads again needed to be fully concentrated as the Pendine team were coming off the back of an impressive performance against Saundersfoot the previous day. Rink one got the Tenby side off to a good start. The foursome of Neil Dickinson, Lee Richards, Craig Guymer and skip Pat Currie were in unstoppable form. The contest was close at half-time, but Pat and his men cruised into an impressive seven-shot lead by the end. Terry Howells was in the position of skipping a relatively newly-formed rink, consisting of Gerald Hewitt, Mike Crockford and Peter Hooper. It seemed an inspired selection as they gelled well and marched to an excellent five-shot victory. The rink seemed to be positive and upbeat from the start, which even led to the normally cautious vice- captain ditching two jacks at pace. Peter Day and his rink of Dai Spencer, Reg Thake and Terry Preston were next up. The Tenby men were always behind from the start and at one time they were 13-7 down. With a spirited performance, however, they managed to hang in there and were just edged out by two shots at the death. Captain Andrew Muskett and his rink of Luke Guymer, Graham Hill and Jon Webb again impressed. The in-form captain, with the aid of good performances, once again steered his rink to a creditable four-shot victory. A much better performance from Tenby saw them amass a valuable 12 points, which will keep up their quest for a top three finish come end of season. Tenby have no game this weekend due to the County Finals being held in Fishguard. Rink scores (Tenby first, Pendine skips only): Neil Dickinson, Lee Richards, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 22; J. Griffiths 15 Gerald Hewitt, Mike Crockford, Peter Hooper, Terry Howells 20; S. K-Thomas 15. Dai Spencer, Reg Thake, Terry Preston, Peter Day 15; M. Evans 17 Luke Guymer, Graham Hill, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 18; M. Thomas 14.
FIVE ARCHES 65 (0) HAVERFORDWEST 90 (14 pts)
Stena sponsored Five Arches came up against a Haverfordwest side with a good mixture of young as well as experienced bowlers last Sunday. The Arches team fought well all afternoon and deserved something from the match, but alas, their luck wasn't in and they lost by 90 shots to 65. On rink one, Bill Bailey was just ahead at tea, ably supported by collier Donoghue, Ray Hine and Cyril Roberts. Unfortunately, after the break, a seven was dropped and they were then vulnerable thereafter. Rink two with Jim Taylor, Harry Meads, Jonathan Hubbard and the quiet and cool Rob Wilkins had a ding dong battle against the county manager, David Jones, losing in the end by just two shots. Rink three saw Roy and Tony Powling, Stuart Askew and Gwyn Beynon all playing well. After being 15-6 down at tea, they fought back well, but in the end lost out by three shots, 25 to 22, due mainly to the firing skills of young Craig Jones converting good heads, much to Roy's chagrin. Rink four also saw Dave King Thomas's quartet 13 -4 down at tea time, but with the assistance of Ashley Hooper, Denis Watkins and Jock Best, they got back to 18-15 on the 19th end, but failed to capitalise on the last two ends to lose 21-15. Scores (Five Arches skips first): B. Bailey 13, J. Dockerty 27; R. Wilkins 15, D. Jones 17; R. Powling 22, C. Jones 25; D. King Thomas 15, P. D. S. Jenkins 21.
