At Last

After a long winter's wait, bowlers were let loose once again on Tenby's much-respected bowling surface for the 81st season. At 2 pm last Saturday, chairman David King Thomas welcomed the guests, and members. David highlighted the work done by volunteers during the long winter, whose efforts were there for all to see; all was pristine clean and in good working order. For the resultant savings on the maintenance bill and for the work done, there was spontaneous applause by all the members.  David named the members, thanking them for their diligence under the guidance of the club captain, Mike Crockford - Lynn DelaBertouche, Gerry and Ted Brutnell, Doug Silcox, Gwyn Beynon, Jim Taylor, Reg Thake Dennis Watkins and Bertie Brace. Club captain Mike Crockford introduced the special guests, Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs Sue Lane, and Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter.  Mike claimed to have introduced Sue to local government many years ago and admired her input into the town's affairs, this being Sue's third term as Mayor of Tenby.  Clr. Mrs. Lane responded with an appreciation of the important role of Tenby Bowling Club in the resort for members and the many visitors annually. Sue wished the bowlers good luck for the season and the future. Mike then introduced president Ben Owens, who in turn wished all bowlers good sport, before officially opening Tenby green by bowling the 'time honoured' first bowl of the season, preceded by the Ken Hewlings  silver 'jack'.  Although the weather was distinctly cool, the stalwart few spent a happy hour appreciating the high standard of the bowling surface, second to none. It was so good, especially this early in the season, that there were touchers galore.  As usual Chris Jenkins, greenkeeper, has done an outstanding job - well done.

Fixtures

Members are advised to hone their bowling skills during the remainder of April, as a hectic season begins on May 1.   The Tenby team kicks-off tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 pm with a friendly against Ammanford Park.

London marathon

As usual, Tenby bowlers will have enthusiastic runners in this prestigious affair. Club secretary David Spencer, along with his brother Brian and Ashley Hooper, will be fund-raising for the Motor Neurone Disease charity. Sponsor forms are available in the clubhouse for any member wishing to sponsor this worthy cause.  Talking of worthy causes, last Thursday's charity quiz was very well attended by Tenby residents, supporting a very successful fund-raiser for the RNLI. All were grateful for Tenby Bowling Club's input, especially Lee Richards, the quizmaster.  Next event on the social calendar is the 'Horse Racing' on Saturday, April 30, in aid of  St. Teilo's School.
