TENBY 133 HEAVITREE 95
These visitors from near Exeter had enjoyed their tour of the county, and were playing their last match in Tenby. Cyril Roberts had a fine game in Dai King Thomas's rink as they won by nine shots. It was nice to see Gladys Gray back on the green again as she turned a deaf ear to Bert's exhortations, but they still won by three shots. Doug Silcox and his foursome scored an amazing two 5s and two 4s and then two 3s to chalk up a great 24-10 victory. The whole rink played well for Doug. In a close encounter, Gwyn Beynon and his crew were just edged out by four shots. Vera and her rink were up against the tourists' president, but that meant nothing to our Vera, Lon, Dennis and Peggy as they came home by three shots. After 11 ends, Mike and his crew were seven shots up, but the visitors came back in the second half to only lose by three. Christine Morgan again had a great game, and Eric was quite satisfied with his contribution, well that's what he told me in the bar afterwards! Rink scores (Tenby first, Heavitree skips only) were as follows: G. Brutnell, V. Roberts, H. Meades, G. Beynon 14; P. Hume 18. M. Draper, E. Dorling, C. Morgan, M. Crockford 22; D. Pritchard 17. M. Skyrme, M. Burns, J. Best, D. Silcox 24; K. Mills 10. P. Best, D. Watkins, L. Evans, V. Williams 22; P. Lewis 19. A. Askew, G. Gray, A. Owens, B. Barnikel 21; J. Ashford 18. I. Silcox, C. Roberts, E. Wilkins, D. King Thomas 22; G. Clarke 13.
GOSCAR 71 (12 pts.) PENDINE 68 (2)
On a dry Friday night recently, Goscar finished their home games for the season against the new division two champions, Pendine. What a night it turned out to be as the whole team combined to produce their best performance of the season to win on three of the four rinks and securing overall victory by just three shots, shocking their opponents and also making captain Ted Brutnell extremely proud of his team. They now look forward to their forthcoming final game of the season at St. Katherine's when they will be hoping to repeat this performance. Lewis Hilling was in total command on rink two as he took his rink of Reg Thake, Ray Hine and Ted Brutnell, into a 22-3 lead, which included a run of 14 unanswered shots. Pendine did come back a little afterwards, but soon dropped a second five in the match which saw the home team come home victorious by a comfortable 12 shot margin. Rink three had Rob Wilkins have a sound game at skip, with good support from Steve Taylor, Alec Vincent and Dennis Watkins. From a fairly even start at six each, the Goscar boys decided it was time to take charge. Some great bowling by all four saw them go into a five shot lead. With Pendine coming back to within two shots, the home side pushed again to force a six shot lead, which despite another strong fightback over the closing two ends was enough to win the match by one shot. Skip Jonathan Hubbard was involved in a hard struggle out on rink four as he had to battle from a five shot deficit at tea. After dropping another two afterwards, Jonathan went on to enjoy a magnificent run of 12 shots, including a pick-up of five. Both Stuart Askew and Mike Crockford, had very strong games and the rink were six up going into the final end. Although they went on to drop a two, they won the match by an impressive four shots. The only disappointment on a great night was that of another heavy defeat for skip Harry Meads. Unfortunately, his rink has found it hard going this season and this game was no exception. After a bright start, they soon seemed to fall away and were no match for a strong Pendine side. Still not even this could dampen the delight for the home team on this night. Well done everyone! Rink scores (Goscar first, Pendine skips only) were: R. Thake, R. Hine, T. Brutnell, L. Hilling 27; M. Evans 15. S. Taylor, A. Vincent, D. Watkins, R. Wilkins 18; S. K. Thomas 17. S. Askew, C. Roberts, M. Crockford, J. Hubbard 17; J. Griffiths 13. J. Lester, A. Rootes, A. Grimbaldeston, H. Meads 9; M. Thomas 23.
GOSCAR 52 (1 pt.) ST. THOMAS 74 (13)
With the league campaign slowly coming to an end, friendships were renewed on the bowling green at Haverfordwest in this rearranged match between the two sides in which the spirit of how the game is played is of more importance than any result. Oh yes the result, after a very bright start by the visitors and with scores being tight at tea on all rinks, they seemed to let their early success get to them, as they faded afterwards and let the boys of St. Thomas run out by 22, not that either side really cared about that! Lewis Hilling had a titanic battle as he skipped his rink superbly on rink two. They started well going into a 7-3 lead, but they soon let that slip as they dropped 11 shots to trail 14-8. Trailing seemed to inspire the whole rink as they rallied hard and levelled matters at 15-all going into the last end. Unfortunately, they couldn't quite secure shot and went on to lose by one shot. Skip Jonathan Hubbard was over on rink three against the experienced Peter 'Bus' Jenkins. Again this was a very tight encounter which saw a fine a display by Reg Thake at second, along with a good display by young Scot Meads. After dropping a six early on, Goscar fought hard to level things, and the game was swinging either way from then on in. The crucial point however was that earlier six as St. Thomas secured victory by five. Rink four saw Harry Meads and his men really struggle to get any real foothold in this one. They only scored on five ends and could do nothing to stop the formidable drawing skills of the St. Thomas quartet, as they raced away early in this match and were never really challenged and they were victorious by a huge 16 shots. Best rink on the night was that of Rob Wilkins and his rink of Jack Lester, Steve Taylor and Jonathan Webb, as all four produced some great bowling as they picked up 11 shots over four ends. They couldn't quite sustain it as St. Thomas came back well to go into an 18-14 lead with two ends left. More great bowls by the Goscar lads saw them fightback yet again in this ding-dong battle and gain a well earned draw at 18-each. Rink scores (Goscar first, St Thomas skips only) were: S. Askew, T. Brutnell, J. Taylor, L. Hilling 15; H. P. Davies 16. S. Meads, R. Thake, D. Watkins, J. Hubbard 13; P. 'Bus' Jenkins 18. A. Rootes, A Grimbaldeston, D. K. Thomas, H. Meads 6; D. Hughes 22. J. Lester, S. Taylor, J. Webb, R. Wilkins 18; B. Price 18.
