FIVE ARCHES 68 (3 pts) HAVERFORDWEST 81 (11)

After being well beaten by Haverfordwest on their own green earlier in the season, the Arches were not confident going into the return fixture with a weakened team. Picking up three points and only losing by 13 shots was a much better result than those of late and augurs well for the last five league games of the season. There was only one poor rink result for the Arches, as on the other three rinks the games were very tight and could have gone either way. At one time, six points were a possibility. On rink one, Roy Powling's quartet were outbowled throughout the game. Although only five shots down after 14 ends, they were unable to score for a further six ends, giving away 15 unanswered shots to lose by 18. Alongside, Ray Holly had a tight game with P. D. S. Jenkins. Always three/five shots down throughout the game, he could not find that breakthrough to catch up and finally succumbed by three. Dave King-Thomas earned a very satisfactory draw in a low scoring game which finished 15 shots apiece. With the lead changing hands several times, Dave had a really brilliant game and saved the rink on numerous occasions. It was a game of several sections for Mike Crockford. After nine ends he was 12-4 down, but then the tea interval changed everything. A run of six ends and 13 shots saw him pull into a five-shot lead, which then evaporated, only to pick up a further seven shots on the last two ends to win by eight. A special thank you to the Arches' last minute substitute, Eric Dorling, who came on saying, "I will do my best." He certainly did and helped D.K.T. to an honourable draw. The Five Arches are sponsored by Stena Line and for this match by Five Ways Garage. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Haverfordwest skips only): B. Diment, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 14; C. Jones 32. R. Hurlow, B. Bullen, B. Barnikel, R. Holly 14; P. D. S. Jenkins 17. N. Dickinson, E. Dorling, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 15; J. Docherty 15. B. Russell, M. Donoghue, K. Hubbard, M. Crockford 25; Paul Jenkins 17.

GOSCAR 55 ST. THOMAS 71

For the final Brewers Cup game of the season, St. Thomas were the opponents for the Goscar team in a midweek fixture in Tenby. Due to their unforeseen late arrival, both captains agreed that 18 ends would be played. There is always a feelgood factor in games between the two sides and this continued in this encounter, with everyone having a pleasurable match. The overall result was close, with St. Thomas just sneaking it by 16 shots, although Goscar did pick up a win on one rink. Rink two saw skip Lewis Hilling give a strong display of accurate bowling along with Reg Thake, Ray Hine and Graham Hill. They took a very early lead which was never threatened. A run of 10 shots in five ends, including a five near the end, confirmed the win for the boys by a margin of six. A titanic battle took place on rink three as the game swung one way, then the other. At one point, skip Harry Meads led by four, but subsequently dropped a five and a two to trail by three, which finally proved just too much to recover as they went down by two shots The rink skipped by Rob Wilkins was bringing out some great shots next door on rink four to level the scores at seven at the tea break. From there, they could only score a further three shots as Peter Jenkins and his men took control with some fine bowling as they picked up a further 13 shots to win by a comfortable 10 shots. Skip Jonathan Hubbard struggled to get a foothold in the match on rink five, as he was constantly under pressure from great front end bowls by the St. Thomas lead and second. Jonathan and his team-mates battled hard, but never seriously challenged their opponents and went down by a 10-shot deficit. Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Thomas skips only): R. Thake, R. Hine, G. Hill, L. Hilling 19; O. Evans 13. J. Lester, S. Taylor, A. Grimbledeston, H. Meads 18; H. P. Davies 20. S. Askew, A. Rootes, B. Bailey, R. Wilkins 10; P. Bus Jenkins 20. T. Brutnell, C. Roberts, D. Watkins, J. Hubbard 8; R. Harries 18.
