Tourists 114

This was the first of this season's friendlies against tourists from over the border.

These Bristol bowlers come from a long established club, over 80 years, and were originally attached to the shoe manufacturer G. B. Britton. They, like many clubs, were formed as a social extension of the various businesses in the UK, but this generally died out in the 1970s and 80s, members successfully taking over the running of their clubs.

This fine body of bowlers were relishing a long weekend of bowls on tour in Wales and Tenby was their first choice, lured by many accurate tales of the quality of the Tenby green.    They were not disappointed and were full of praise for Tenby's facilities.

The game itself was very competitive and enjoyable, home advantage proving important in the end for the Tenby bowlers.

Captain of the day for Tenby, Lewis Hilling, did well on the green, but was simply stunning at the après bowls get-together.  Great day.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only): were

S. Taylor, J. Taylor, B. Best, D. King Thomas 31; M. Hurse 13.

B. Russell, T. Harvey, G. Hill, M. Donoghue 22; B. Cave 18.

T. Brutnell, C. Roberts, A. Grimbaldeston, G. Beynon 17; R. Ferris 23.

J. King, N. Dickinson, L. Hilling, J. Hubbard 16; R. Tanner 28.

A. Rootes, T. Powling, A. Redman, B. Barnikel 30; B. Rowe 13.

S. Askew, H. Meads, D. Watkins, B. Bailey 16; F. Fulcoop 19.

   Stunned

All of the Tenby bowlers were extremely shocked at the sudden passing of David Morgan. David and his family have associations with Tenby town over many years and David had been an important cog in the successful Tenby bowling club's first team for about 10 years.

GOSCAR 84 (4 pts)

ST. THOMAS 91 (10)

On a glorious afternoon, Goscar entertained St. Thomas in their first home game of the season. The game was played on a lightning fast green which everyone found hard to control at times.

It turned out to be a very close encounter, with the overall result in the balance until the last few ends, but eventually the visitors ran out winners by the very narrow margin of seven shots.

Rink two saw Jonathan Hubbard continue his good start to the season with another fine performance as skip, with good support from Dennis Watkins at third and good second half displays from Ted Brutnell and Cyril Roberts.

The home side picked up a six towards the end, which eventually secured victory by the same margin.

It was nice to see Reg Thake back at second on rink three and Arthur Grimbaldeston playing his first game for Goscar at skip. They found it tough against a good St. Thomas rink, but kept it tight, only going down by seven at the end.

Harry Meads and his rink were holding their own until end 15 when they trailed by one shot, but a run of 16 shots in just five ends, including a seven on one end, for the visitors saw them comfortable winners by 11 shots.

The rink skipped by Rob Wilkins was involved in a very close game right to the finish. After an exchange of five shots on consecutive ends for both sides, the home side led by one shot with just three ends to go. Good performances by Steve Taylor at third and with Joe Richards and Stuart Askew performing well throughout, Rob and his men held their nerve to run out eventual winners by five shots.

Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Thomas skips only):

T. Brutnell, C. Roberts, D. Watkins, J. Hubbard 25; H. Davies 19.

L. McDaid, R. Thake, R. Hine, A. Grimbaldeston 17; W. George 24.

J. King, A. Vincent, A. Rootes, H. Meads 17; P. Bus Jenkins 28.

J. Richards, S. Askew, S. Taylor, R. Wilkins 25; N. Brown 20.
