TENBY 126
NEWQUAY AND CEREDIGION 92
The annual visit from the bowlers of the north of the county was again a very delightful affair on Sunday and enjoyed by everyone.
Tenby won on three three rinks and the visitors on three, with Tenby managing to win overall due to the substantial wins on their successful rinks.
The ladies again did the club proud and the high tea of sandwiches, scones and a selection of cream cakes after 10 ends made the whole afternoon into a tea party, though this did not detract from the bowling which was very competitive throughout.
So much so that Newquay have already made a request for a return visit on the same day next season.
John Baggot lead the way with a substantial 21 shot win. Down by a few shots at tea, the refreshments must have had an immediate effect as there was no holding his rink after the break.
Next door on rink two, assisting Gwyn Beynon was that sprightly recycled teenager Gladys Gray playing her second game on consecutive days and showing her staying power by picking up eight shots over the last four ends.
A late withdrawal necessitated the last minute promotion of Lon Evans to skip on rink three. All four Tenby players fought well before going down by eight shots.
Rink four saw Ceris Hewlings against the Newquay captain. No quarter was given and her rink went into the last end all-square, only to drop a shot on the last few woods of the game.
Although outscoring his opponents on the number of ends won, Lee Richards and his foursome dropped several counts of three and were unlucky to lose by eight shots.
Steady bowling by all on the rink skipped by Mair Marquiss, with the late inclusion of Sue Henderson, whose sister Lyn guested for the visitors, saw Mair only allowing her opponents to score on five ends as she chalked up a substantial win.
Rink scores were:
M. Skyrme, S. Taylor, A. Owen, J. Baggot 32; Visitors 11.
J. Hubbard, G. Gray, B. Barnikel, G. Beynon 25; L. Evans 14.
G. Brutnell, M. Draper, A. Rootes, L. Evans 10; B. Hunt 18.
N. Dickinson, J. King, D. Silcox, C. Hewlings 19; J. Evans 20.
P. Jones, H. Meads, C. Morgan, L. Richards 15; G. Rees 23.
T. Brutnell, S. Henderson, B. Bailey, M. Marquiss 25; J. Evans 6.
Monday Evening League
One of the most popular club events each season at Tenby Bowling Club for the male members is the Monday evening league. The format is two-wood triples, 21 ends of very testing, but enjoyable bowling. It all started in 1992 following up an idea which we picked up in Largs on our Scottish tour, organised by county president John Badham.
Len Bowker, Alan Redman, Ben Owens and Tom Arnold started the ball rolling and it was an immediate hit, mainly because participants realised that it was the perfect vehicle for practising the various facets of bowling and improving our performance in the serious league games. Organising team, this year, was Alan Redman (chief barker) Ben Owens and Terry Preston, all kept in order by delightful Alison Redman.
We have been fortunate in attracting sponsors annually. Currently Miguel Gonzales, of the popular Giltar Hotel is our generous sponsor.
At the 'last night' presentation party, club president Ben Owens, congratulated everyone on a very successful season, especially the organisers and the winners. Prizes monies extended to a generous fifth place.
Terry Preston won the first prize and the Monday Evening Shield, with an exceptional series of consistent bowling and a bit of luck. Runner-up was enthusiastic Dai Spencer, third was Roy Powling, fourth Bert Barnikel who just pipped fifth place Haydn Guy.
Miguel, after presenting the prizes, was most generous in his praise of our 'little club' and the important role it plays in the community and the tourist industry every year. A bowler in his own right, Miguel seriously regrets not having the time to play each year.
End of Season
Tomorrow (Saturday), greenkeeper Chris Jenkins, hopefully with a large band of volunteers, puts the green to bed for the winter, after a very successful season of bowling in almost perfect weather.
All those grotty bar towels to be washed and stored with the rest of our quite substantial amount of gear we seem to accumulate in our bowls bags.
For those members who suffer from bowling withdrawal symptoms there is always the indoor at Heatherton or Bro Myrddin where the weather is always fair.
