Whitland 1st XV played host to Briton Ferry in the second round of the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup on Saturday, and after a strong forward display, ran out winners by 43 points to nil. Briton Ferry, however, must be congratulated on their squad performance. They never gave up trying and travelled home with their heads held high. Whitland opened the scoring as early as the third minute, when centre Lee Glanville crossed for the first try after good work by the Whitland pack and some excellent handling by prop Richard Smith and centre Eifion Roberts. Outside-half Aled Davies added the conversion. Briton Ferry's centre Chris Jones failed with a penalty some two minutes later, before Whitland doubled their lead after 14 minutes when winger Barry John picked up a loose ball on the halfway line and burst through the weak defence to score in the corner, again Davies adding the two points. Whitland ended the half strongly and Aled Davies added a penalty a minute before the break to give the Borderers a 17-points lead at the break. Whitland added four more tries in the second half, including two by fullback Gavin Morris, one being an interception try from his own 22 when he ran the full length of the field to score under the posts. The other tries were scored by number eight Randall Williams and another by centre Lee Glanville. Aled Davies added three of the four conversions. Team fielded: Gavin Morris, Will Davies, Lee Glanville, Eifion Roberts, Barry John (Jack Tremlett), Aled Davies, Andrew Jenkins (Gareth Davies), Romeo Collela (Gareth Williams), Aperaamo Tauialo, Richard Smith (Aled Harris), Ben Armstrong, Carwyn Davies, John Bowen, Phil Morgan, capt., Randall Williams (Johnny Koloi). Match referee was Mr. Ken Bowen. The man-of-the-match, adjudicated by the main match sponsors, was Aperaamo Tauialo. Main match sponsors: Whitland RFC main committee and Patrons and Water Line Ltd; team sponsors: Ron Moundsey, McDonalds, Corrs Brewers and Castell Howell Foods; ball sponsor: Matthew Thomas, PrOjet, Kilgetty. Whitland have no matches tomorrow (Saturday) due to the Welsh international at Cardiff. The 1st XV should have travelled to Tonmawr last Wednesday evening for a rearranged match, from earlier in the season, but this also had to be postponed due to a bereavement at Tonmawr. The next home match will be on Saturday, November 13, when they play host to local rivals, Narberth.
