Llantwit Fardre 26 pts. Whitland 1st XV 18

Whitland were dumped out of the SWALEC Welsh Cup by Division Three East high fliers Llantwit Fardre last Saturday by 26 points to 18... and to put it simply, they wanted it more, fought for it more and deserved it more.

They took the lead when scrum-half Carl Thomas kicked a penalty after 12 minutes, before outside-half Geraint Walsh intercepted to score their first try, which Thomas converted, to leave their Division One West opponents facing an early double-figure deficit.

Whitland did hit back after 25 minutes when outside-half Carwyn Jones chipped through for winger Aled Jones, who gave chase and, after hacking through, won the foot race to touch down. Jones added the extra two points with a successful conversion.

Five minutes later, after good work by the pack and some great play by Whitland's two centres, Gary Evans and Lee Glanville, fullback Will Davies was put away to score a second try for the Borderers, which this time went unconverted.

Nevertheless, it saw Whitland get their noses in front for the first time at 12 points to 10, but right on half-time, Carl Thomas restored the lead for the home side with his second penalty.

Ten minutes into the second half, Whitland regained the lead with a Carwyn Jones penalty and then, with the pack beginning to get the upper hand, the Borderers started to dominate and had a good 10 minutes.

They were rocked back on their heels, however, when a mistake gave Llantwit a lineout in Whitland's half, from which they scored through flanker Dominic Masters.

Carl Thomas converted from the touchline to restore the lead for the home side and, after Jones failed with a penalty, Thomas again increased the lead with his third to give Llantwit an eight-point cushion.

Carwyn Jones did respond with a penalty to cut the gap to five, but after some indiscipline in the Whitland front row, Thomas again restored the all-important eight-point gap and the Borderers failed to score again as they were sent crashing out of the cup

Whitland Youth 29 pts. Mumbles Youth 5

Whitland earned their place in the last eight of the Webb Ellis Welsh Youth Cup after a hard fought tussle on Saturday.

The battle was won up front where the Whitland pack wore down the opposition and gave their backs plenty of good ball, but in was only in the last quarter that the young Borderers totally dominated the game and scored two tries.

The first half saw Whitland lead by 10 points to nil after outside-half Jonathan Thomas intercepted to score the only try of the half, which fullback James Stephenson converted; he also added a penalty.

Whitland extended their lead to 17 points when Stephenson scored a try, which he again converted, before Mumbles scored their only points of the game when centre Aled Jenkins crossed for an unconverted try.

Whitland sealed the game with two tries in the last quarter from winger Dafydd Williams and fullback James Stephenson, who converted one to take his personal tally to 19 points for the game.

Whitland must now travel to face Newbridge Youth for a place in the semi-final.
