Whitland 14 pts.

Corus 10

Whitland deserved to win this National League Division One West match, but nearly gave it away, before holding on to claim victory.

The first half saw Corus take the lead with a penalty from outside-half Mike Hook, an advantage they still held at half-time due to Whitland's own number 10, Emyr Williams, missing three penalties.

Early in the second half Williams again failed with a penalty, before fullback Carwyn Jones took over the kicking duties to level the score after 10 minutes.

He doubled his side's score with his second penalty and midway through the half the Borderers scored their only try of the game when scrum-half Gary Davies gathered a loose ball to touch down.

The try went unconverted, but with Jones adding a penalty five minutes later to make it 14 points to three, things looked comfortable for Whitland, but when Corus's skipper and right winger Mark Harvey gathered a kick through and scored in the corner, with replacement numbner 10, Rhys Williams, adding the conversion, it made for a very tense finish.

Just before the final whistle, number eight Randall Williams and flanker Jack Mason were both yellow-carded, leaving Whitland to face a five-metre scrum with just six forwards. Things did not look good, but some dogged defence saw the Borderers home. Phew!

Tomorrow (Saturday), they travel to play Felinfoel.

Man-of-the-match was Gary Davies.

Dunvant 2nd XV 10 pts. Whitland

Wanderers 33

Whitland's second string won their first game in the Carmarthen Tyre Services League with a convincing away victory at Dunvant.

In the process they scored five tries, three by centre Kristian Richards and one apiece from wingers Andrew Thomas and Gareth Morris. Outside-half Eifion Roberts added four conversions.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Wanderers are home to Mumbles.

Whitland beat last year's Webb Ellis Welsh Cup finalists with some ease to knock them out in the first round of this year's competition after a superb team effort at Parc Dr. Owen.

The pack were described as awsome and the backs controlled and tackled like heroes.

Whitland took the lead as early as the first minute when James 'Cubby' Davies touched down and fullback James Stephenson added the conversion. Ten minutes later they doubled their lead when scrum-half Aled Rees went over for a try and Stephenson again added the extras, before also banging over a penalty.

Bonymaen then scored their only points of the game when outside-half Cameron Clement kicked a penalty, before prop Brinley Toms added Whitland's third try and again Stephenson slotted the conversion to give a half-time score of 24 points to three.

Whitland added a fourth in the second half when winger Duncan Evans scored an unconverted try, this being the last score of a truly wonderful game of rugby.

Whitland now travel to play Waunarlwydd Youth in the next round on October 4.
