Tenby was particularly delighted when it was revealed that the town has scooped the title of best small town in Wales for the 10th year in succession.
With Wales becoming ever-more flower conscious and civic pride at an all time high among local authorities, Tenby once again came up trumps with its attractive and well cared for individual displays at properties and businesses and public gardens, many of which were this year planted on a maritime theme.
Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward said she was "absolutely delighted" with the result which were officially announced by Wales in Bloom yesterday (Thursday).
"We had a few complaints from people at the start of the summer about our plans, but we had faith in our ideas and all the hard work has certainly paid off," she continued.
Even though the weather has not been at its best, flower power certainly seems to have been reigning in Tenby.
"We are absolutely proud and thrilled to win the title for the 10th successive year," Clr. Mrs. Ward added.
Clr. Mrs. Ward extended her grateful thanks to all the townspeople who created "beautiful floral displays" which helped the town to receive the national accolade.
She also paid special tribute to the hard work which has been done by the town council gardeners and she urged everyone to "keep up the good work".
Tenby's victory was joined by success in Narberth where months of hard work planting, weeding and watering flower displays has also paid off with the announcement that the Queen's Hall has been voted best in the public buildings class.
This is the first time Narberth has entered the prestigious floral competition and Mayor and Narberth in Bloom instigator and committee chairman, Clr. Eric Feetham was naturally delighted with the news.
"I am very pleased at our achievement especially as it was our first attempt," he commented.
"I think it is great for both the town of Narberth and the Queen's Hall. It is a pity that the weather has taken a change for the worse and the rain has damaged some of the flowers, but I hope that, perhaps, with a little more sunshine, they will last a couple more weeks.
"The displays at the Queen's Hall are magnificent and there are other very nice displays in other areas of the town.
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Narberth in Bloom project including SPARC for the community pride grant.
"If a few more people would have made a small effort to support this project the town of Narberth may have won the best town award," he added.
Also successful in this year's awards were Oakwood Leisure Park who picked up a merit award in the commercial/retail enterprise (over 15m total display width) category and Well Park, New Hedges who won a merit award in the caravan and camping parks (50-100 units) section.
Clive Addison, chairman of Wales in Bloom said: "This year's competition, the first of the new millennium, has exceeded expectations yet again, making life very difficult but gratifying for our judging panel. The task of judging is becoming increasingly difficult year on year, testimony to the hard work of communities, businesses, organisations and individuals all over Wales.
"The results of these endeavours are all-important in making Wales both a rewarding place to live and work in and a beautiful place to visit. My heartfelt congratulations go out to all participants and my thanks to the judging panel for their hard work."
