A fund-raising group to help aid a local bird rescue centre has recently taken off.

The Friends of Tinkers Hill Bird of Prey and Swan Rescue Centre are now making an appeal for donations and help to support the wildlife sanctuary which is based in Amroth.

For the past 18 years, Maria Evans and her husband David have put in their own money to keep the voluntary run Tinkers Hill Farm going. In 2006 alone the centre successfully treated and released 123 birds of prey, 175 seabirds and 264 swans.

"To have a source of organised fund-raising will be terrific," commented Maria, who recently reached the final of the ITV Wales Local Hereos award, "With the great help of the Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS), The Friends have now got off the ground and hopefully will be able to raise enough money to give the centre continuity and stop me worrying about it always being a financial struggle," she added.
